i would still have kept it within a few inches, and maybe complemented your lighting with some CFLs or Floros

i actually consider myself hydro-illiterate. i can help because ive done some reading but its always been too complicated for me to try i agree with scar; you should get your toes wet and try a soil grow, so you get a feel for the plants, before you jump into a reservoir full of nutrient water haha
