how far do you keep your light from plants?

my cooltube and exhaust is 6inch. Room will stay around 80 degrees f. Dont really know how far I should keep light away using 1000watt super hps. Also potting in 5 gallon pots. Grow starts when seeds get here.

just ordered 2 THC bomb auto and 2 dark devil auto. Can I start seeds with 1000 watt bulb too? I also have 400 watt ballast as well.
