If your using AN and having problems then switch to a real product. Commercial hydro growers all use dead rezs, bennies are useful but in the long run just bleach the system like people told you too and keep .05 ppms of chlorine in your res constantly.

yes fill the tray is the best solution. Also you can just use a piece of panda film and cover the top of the tray preventing light, but air will still prune.

roots do most of there stretching during the dry period, its searching for water. If theres too much water the roots wont grow rapidly and will most likely rot away.
