Basic biology has taught us that a growing plant needs specific bands of red and blue light to stimulate chlorophyl production. It is also well known that blue light promotes vegetative growth and red light promotes fruiting & flowering. [/FONT]
[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Until recently, the only options for growers have been inefficient, energy hogging HID systems using High Pressure Sodium & Metal Halide lamps requiring ballasts and additional cooling. The problem is, these systems consume large amounts of power yet direct very little of their consumed energy towards plant growth. Most of the light these systems produce falls outside the red and blue spectrum in the form of ultra violet, infrared or other visible light not used for the production of chlorophyll. This is incredibly inefficient and results in a WHOPPING 85-90% energy loss. That’s right, only 10-15% of the energy used in the average HID system is actually used to grow plants! Understanding the history of these lamps, one can understand why. They were originally designed to provide overhead lighting in warehouses and street lamps. They were not intended to grow plants and they certainly weren't designed to be energy efficient. Relative to other lighting systems, there has been little to advance bulb technology for HPS or Metal Halide lamps during the past 40 years. [/FONT]
