babygro, I would like to say that you have taught me a few things that I had no idea of so here, Thank You. also, I know who to bug when I have questions now (I promise it wont be too much ha) I think that there are only a selected few who people on this site should really take advice from..... one of them would be b-gro i give you a ++ on your rep. points

Ive been looking through a lot of pictures and Im seeing more tall skinny trees wrather than ones that are shot and bushy....... we will see though, like I said... first time and I am pretty happy so far... but I do know what is needed for the 2nd time around

I agree, I've seen many more plants that are far more streched on this site. YOu can get a new reflector for like $30 that will cover more area. Also, while your at it, why not get an air coolable one for a little more.
I was under the impression that HPS with enhanced blue spectrum would decrease stretching, but not as much as an MH would. That's why I was curious if you used that type of bulb or not.

Are the HPS with enhanced blue spectrum more effective for veg than the ones that don't have the extra blue? I realized that MH would be far better which is why half way through my grow I got a conversion, but I'm curious to know if the HPS like son agro are even worth it.

Oh sweet jesus, wtf are u ppl on????Since when HPS causes stretching????
Run an experiment with MH and HPS both at the same distance, lets say 2 feet from the top of the canopy and let´s find out if it´s the spectrum or the light source to canopy distance that cause straching shall we????
The only reason why growers use more of Blue Spectrum bulbs during vegetative growth is to get the ARTIFICIAL conditions closer to NATURE conditions....also getting a 1kw bulb 3 feet away from the canopy is equal to getting the 110 000 lummens divided in half in each foot distance, and the internodal distance doubling or tripling...what most ppl don´t understand is that in order to get the most out of a 1kw or any HID bulb for that matter is VENTILATION...get some cooling for that bulb and start lowering the light gradually....if i use a 400w HPS at no more then 6" u can certanly use a 1kw at 16" just make sure u cool down the sucker...
 
Oh and btw the math on lummens is wrong aswell, a bulb looses HALF of its lummens per foot distance...so if a 1kw produces 140 000 lummens it will put out 70 000 at 12", 35 000 at 24" bla bla bla....
 
Veged 6 weeks under 400w HPS (started at 12" ended at 6"....do they look streched??????????????

what´s the confusion about dude??..there is no reason to be confused, u have ure plants a bit streched not because u use HPS orange/red spectrum during the entire grow but because u have the distance to far away, if ur plants were getting toasted (with temps reaching 100ºf no wonder) u need to move the light away but to a reasonable distance DONT PUT THE LIGHT 3 FEET AWAY....get propper VENTILATION (add an extra fan blowing right into the 1kw sucker) get air intake, get extractor fans, the objective is getting the light as close as u possibly can without scorching the plants and loosing light surface...if u can achieve this ull get bushier and more compact plants...btw 500$ for a 1kw hps system = rip off......

alright I guess I must switch..... now also in my room there is no heater vents coming into the room, so Im thinking I need a space heater.... are those ok to use in a grow room? i hope so cuz I will HAVE to use one

Totally wrong!

Was there something in my math and figure work in an earlier post you didn't understand?

In vegetative growth, plants only need 2,500 lumens to grow effectively in normal situations (ie without the use of co2 boosters). As I mentioned earlier, a 1000w HPS puts out 140,000 lumens at 1 foot away onto 1 sq foot of space. At 2 feet it will output 140,000/2x2= 35,000 lumens at 3 feet away it will output 140,000/3x3=15,555 lumens. 15,555 lumens at 3 feet (the recommended distance) is more than enough for healthy vegetative growth to take place, but the plants were still very stretched. Heat on it's own does not cause stretching, the red/orange end of the spectrum and the infrared heat being emitted by the HPS bulb causes the stretching, and I've seen it with pretty much every single plant on here people have vegged with a HPS system - regardless of how far or near the plant was to the bulb.

So you're trying to tell me that his plants didn't get enough light during the vegetative growth stage, despite using a 1000w HPS? Laughable! I vegged an almost pure Indica (same as his) under a 200w blue envirolite for about 6 weeks from seed and it was still under 12 inches when I went 12/12! His plants were half as much again taller than mine after vegging for less time and under a 1000w HPS and you reckon they wern't getting enough light? You're mad.

Does it really?

Well you're wrong about the stretching and you're wrong about the distance. Try and get your facts right hmm?

You're clearly not familiar with the 'inverse square law' of diminishing light - light diminishes to the square of the distance from the source.

Thus - a bulb that outputs 140,000 lumens at 1 foot, at 2 foot, you square the distance 2 x 2 = 4. 140,000 lumens/4= 35,000. At 3 feet, you square the distance again - 140,000/3x3=15,555.

Go look it up on google or something and DONT try and undermine what I've said when you've got your facts hopelessly wrong.

Well it depends on what actually causes the stretching in the first place. It's not because of the lack of blue light - it's because of the large amounts of orange/red and infra-red that HPS bulbs produce that causes the stretching, so even adding 10-20% blue light to the HPS bulbs such as the Philips Son Agro or Sylvania Growlux isn't going to stop the stretching. If you want tight internode spacing and as small a height as you can get - forget HPS, you need to veg with a blue Enviro, nlite or MH system, that don't output such large quantities of red/orange and infra-red.
