1000 hps or 400w+600w hps together?

Does anyone know if using a 400w and a 600w hps together would give you the same result? I'm using 2 at the moment vertical, 400 at the bottom with the top of bulb sticking up, above hangs the 600, the tips of bulbs are 1 cm apart so it's like a big bulb

Well not exactly the same result,,for a few reasons.

One would be that the 400watt would need to be a bit closer to the plants to give the best possible 'brightness' (lumens we shall say) to the canopy/plants. Another would be that the 400 is losing a small percentage of its output by being upside down. As in the fitting doesn't emit light. Etc.

I'm assuming you have the 400watt on a stick/pole and the 600 dangling yeah?

With what you have I would either ditch the two and go for a single 1000, or after this grow, switch to having the 400 on one side and the 600 on the other, setup a small veg/clone space with a cheap cfl and then get a perpetual grow on the go. As the plants go into the flower space they go 400 then move over to the 600. We can dream though aye!

I had them in either side before. I used to have a perpetual grow and had a harvest every month. But nowadays I grow for a big harvest that will last me untill next round is Finnished,I veg plants separate while I flower so when I harvest next round go in to 1212. I have a grow journal going on at the moment where you might be able to see the bulbs, the bottom bulb have socket down and the one above is hanging with socket up

Ok cool, I will check your journal out. Thats cool. So you know whats what anything i say is just opinion ah.
Well i guess another thing to consider is if its costing more. Running the two would sure be abit more expensive when you account for ballast and wire no? Somthing to consider.

O and i guess a reason to still run two bulbs would be to mix up the spectrum. So have a MH and a HPS bulb. Maybe something to consider..

I will check out your journal though. Tale it easy

The one major benefit of the two lights imo is spread and coverage, so I think it depends on your space. A large rectangle would benefit from the two lights (though two 600s would obviously provide more even lighting), but if you have like a 5x5 square then the 1000w is probably more efficient.

Edit: though in rereading your original post I may be misunderstanding your setup completely.

Just make sure you can keep enough distance between the plants and the lamp if going with the single 1000W
Why not spread the lamps you have apart a bit to cover more vertical plane? Grow em tall! :hump:
