1000 watt hps two room grow

Hello,

I am in the planning stage of my first solo grow. It will be in the basement, which is wide open at the moment, so I'm planning on constructing some rooms. Doing the math, a 4.5 x 4.5 area will be around 50 watts/sq ft. Should I make the room exactly this size? Or would it be better to make it something like 6 x 6, so I have some room to maneuver around, and then just grow in a 4.5 x 4.5 area.

Also, I plan on getting a smaller MH lamp for a veg room. Would a 250 in the veg area compliment a 1000 hps in the flower room, or should I look at another size light? Also, what would be a good size for the veg room? I plan to use it as a mother/clone/veg area.

Thanks!

On the first part 50 watts is about the minimum for good growth if you decreased it to 4x4 it would be 62.5 that would be better. More area doesnt always mean more weight. Just would have more plants less weight versus less plants that weigh heavier. The second part is hard to answer because we dont know your grow style could be sog, few big plants or etc. That would help determine the size of your grow light for veg. If you plan to use for all three you are going to need more coverage. So 250 I dont think will be enough. This determined by your grow style. Hope this helped.

if you got the room bigger is always better. I flower in about 5x5 area, and wish i had some room in there it would make some many things easier. Bigger is better to because soemtime in the future you might want to add a light or something. What are you building the walls out of?

Ditch the 1000w and go with two 600's. drop a 400 in the veg room and blow the basement into a bloom room:) Your in the basement so hopefully heat will not be a major issues so why not go a little bigger.

Yeah room to move around is better.

I know there are tons of threads saying what light you can grow in certain space but it helps sooooo much to have a bigger area and misc. objects like mylar and panda film prove the norm can be adjusted.

And like natrone23 said, you will be happy when you add more lights! Belive me, it will happen!

I have a 600 MH to veg and 2 600 HPS to bloom. The MH is out in the open (I have a wide open basement like you), The hps's are in a 4 x 8 enclosure lined with reflective material. Heat can be a factor with the two 600s but they cover the space well. As long as you have good ventilation it's not a problem. I haven't worked with 1000's but the heat is a pretty good step up from what I hear. Like an earlier poster said, it's partially down to the details of your grow method.

Thanks for all the replies guys, very helpful!

roo, as far as my grow style, I'm thinking about keeping it pretty simple in the begining. I want to try a variety of strains, so won't be doing SOG. The plan is to start from seed with several strains, at this point it's looking like Arjan's Haze #3, Aurora Indica, and possibly Mazar x Afghan. When I throw them in flower I'll take a clone or two from each. Once they show their sex, I'll eliminate the males and their corresponding clones. Hopefully I can find at least one nice female from each strain worthy of motherhood, and clone her from there.

Thanks natrone23 and DownOnWax for your insight. I figured it would be nice to have room to move around, just wasn't sure if it was necessary to have the plants more packed into the room to better utilize the reflective properties of the walls. I'm planning on using drywall, then lining them with panda film. I have also considered just using some panda film though, no drywall/construction. That would simplify things so much! Also I'll check out those fans.

RollinStoned and shnkrmn, thanks, I'll look into using 600 watters. The area in my basement I was planning to use for both flower and veg is around 8'6" x 4'10". Maybe I'll have to make it into a big flower area with 2 600's and plenty of room to move around, then build another small room for veg. Hmm, decisions, decision!

Would a veg/mother/clone area around 4x4 be big enough? Also, could I get by with a single 400 MH for veg, or should I step up to a 600?

Thanks!

This stuff here is good for walls if you don't want to do construction with drywall and what not. Its rigid foam panels and come in different thickness, denisty ect. http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=15355-23946-78905&lpage=none

i use the stuff with great effectiveness all you need his a box cutter and foil tape, no screws, wood, saws ect

here is some pics where I use the panels to partition a walk in closet, I also painted the outside of the panels white to match the closet

my bloom enclosure is made of stud walls with 1/8 inch hard board covered with reflectix. The hard board comes in 4 x 8 sheets and my enclosure is 4 x 8, height is close to 9. I overlapped sheets of hard board (it's really cheap) and screwed it to the studs. Couple of pix:
