1000W HPS on a ballast made for a 600W

this is my first grow ever, and I have vegged my plants for 5 weeks under a 600w MH. My plants look so healthy and beautiful. I topped 3 of them and FIM one of them. the color the height everything is great especially for my first grow. I was at my local Hydroponics store talking to the gentleman, and he was saying that I would get much much better bud and yield by using a 1000W HPS for flowering instead of a 600W, and he said that my 1000W would work just fine with the same ballast i am using now so i want to know if he is right about that. Also right now my temps range from 75-80 how much more heat can i expect form a 1000W?

lol dumbest thing i have ever heard a hydro guy say.... lol he sells the shit for a living ......not sure it would even fire the lamp up.... prolly blow the bulb somehow....

I seriously doubt the 600W ballast could fire up the 1000W bulb, possibly causing a fire hazard, I wouldn't do it.

It will fire up but wnt be using its full 1000 watts since ur ballast can't even put out a thousand watts. Ur better of buying a quality 600 watt bulb less risk and will be powered correctly and able to go to full potential. Dnt listen to hydro store guys they just want what's in ur wallet

That 1000 watt bulb will fire up and burn at 600 watts just fine. That is how electronic ballasts dim by changing the power out put to the bulb. As long as you don't over power a bulb or go below 50% of the bulbs power rating it will be fine.

thanks guys it all make sense, but i was willing to buy the ballast. This is my first grow and from my understanding a 1000W HPS for 4 plants can do some pretty magical things rather then a 600W. from your experience do you find that to be true?

several things you should consider before you decide to make a jump to 1kw.
Headroom would be one, if you don't think you'll have 2 feet between your canopy and the light stick with the 600.
if you have the room above and can also deal with the added heat/cost then a 1kw lamp will provide a bigger footprint .
Some say 1kw lamps are too intense and I tend to believe that . A light meter would be the only way to tell.
