I got to thinking about that and I was wondering how long I could go in rdwc. Small plants wouldn't be no problem but when there big they drink at least a gallon a day. I was trying to calculate the size rez/control or top off for say 8-12 plants and enough volume to account for the ph swing if you dont have a doser/ph controller. But I was thinking all wrong should have been figuring for one plant, (one sip one plant) so one plant in dwc with an adequate rez or top off for 2 weeks could be done pretty easy.
I can't lie, in the beginning I was getting easy 3 weeks maybe more, that 4x4 gg, she's needing a fill about every 5days! for that size I need a much bigger sip!

once she's in my sip, once every two weeks I add about 2 cups of em1 to water fill up the rez, takes 2ish minutes! then I do nothing for two weeks, and repeat the process!
Do you "activate" your em1...? As in combining it with molasses and storing in airlock "fermentation" before administration to your res...?

The reason I ask, is that I have a set up with big tubs filled with a large quantity of perlite and keep these watered to within an inch of the top of the perlite and rest three 7-gal fabric pots on top which wick up and keep three plants per tub watered from below maintaining dry top soil...

It too is very low maintenance, but I've been considering introducing em1 to the tubs and am wondering about the proper way to introduce and cultivate healthy em1...

Is an occasional molasses feeding required...?

any tips?

yes I do, makes it affordable, I call it expanding tho, bc the way I see it, it's already activated! I'm just stretching it!

but same thing!

only advise I'd say make sure to use a burping cap, they sell them at any beer brewing store, I also store it in the same container I use to expand it until it's gone and them start a new batch!

other advise, make sure to keep it dark, I keep my big jug wrapped in the bag that my bubble bags came in lol! but even a tshirt would work! also don't add a heating pad when activating it doesn't speed it up like some ppl claim, but having it in veg room (bc Temps are usually a Lil higher) I have found that helps speed things up a lil, but a heating pad is too much!

and no I have not fed any molasses, bc of how much gets used to expand it, I don't feel adding more will do any good, if anything it may be too much, but like I said I havent tried it!

last thing I'd say, don't put an air stone in if you running. em1, em1 thrives in anaerobic conditions, adding air can't be good, although I've had ppl argue that with me, I've yet to see any proof, and if you think about it, how can it be good! anaerobic plus air? equals things fighting against each other!

Yeah, I'm with you... That's the whole point of em1: a solution for keeping otherwise stagnate, unaerated reservoirs from going rancid... I only wondered if there was a way to sustain the cultures without having to re~up with new, pricey em1 doses...

Can EM1 be sustained after it exhausts its available nutrient or does EM1 create a self-toxic metabolite which precludes perpetuating its duplication in a res...?

Can EM1 sustain a protracted active propagation...? That is what I'd like to nail down...

I think you answered my question, tho... a stored stock culture thrown in every week or two, I presume, eliminates the guesswork...

I wish I could tell me you, but I'm not sure! but I'm my opinion it's not very expensive! considering that 3/4 cup males a gallon, and a gallon last me anywhere from a few weeks to Maybe a month or 2! the cost is not very much! especially if we're comparing to nutrients and grow lines that other ppl use! and there's nothing else to buy! once the sips are built nothing else is used but a half cup from that gallon, every 2 weeks all the way to every 5 days, depending on size of the girl! I really don't see that as expensive at all!

Talk about stretch! I had to fashion some support using some craft wire

bit of advise, take it for what it is...

I'd try to move them lights closer or at least raise up the plants! that's a lot of stretching! like I said just my 2 cents! but they look great man! at least u still have 4 lol, I've got three good and 1 that is about 2 inches tall and won't shed that dam shell, I tried helping no luck tho, she will be dead inside a week if that shell don't pop!

a simple bucket and a saucer should get them close enough to stop that stretch, they do that bc in the wild, usually they will have to stretch above other plants to get some sun light, it basically the girls way of saying it needs more light!

@Greenthumbs256 - Thanks for the advice. There are a lot of new things in play on this grow for me with this; CMH light which they are currently under, 12/12 photoperiod right out of the gate, unknown genetics, and running a 16oz party cup for the entire grow. I do have the seedlings positioned about 12" off the table and 36" below a 315w CMH. The stretch all happened in a 48hr period. Anyway, I think the stretch is done because they're adding leafs instead of stretching.
