how about a ceramic MH bulb? pricey but look good and made for HPS ballasts as long as its not digital.

If you have a magnetic HPS ballast then your only choices are: HPS, MH conversion & Ceramic Metal Halide, out of these options the CMH is IMHO the best, here is a 150W Philips Mastercolor CMH for $34, a little pricy but TOTALLY WORTH IT!!! Especially if you supplement HPS or red LED's with it. If you do go CMH be sure to get Philips MasterColor and not a GE or some other crap CMH, Philips are the best.

i agree with your opinion of phillips bulbs . do not believe the hype. a mh bulb(standard not conversion) will work just fine in a magnetic hps ballast with only a reduced life span

You can buy a 150 watt metal halide ballast and light for like $15 more than a conversion bulb would cost.

Does this hold true then
I can use a standard 400 mh bulb
with a magnetic HPS ballest
with only reduced lamp life ,no
electrical risk/concerns ?

Thanks
