150 watt hps vs 250 watt cfl for flowering

a lil cheaper isn't always the best value....
and anything less than $60 is kinda splitting hairs...
this is the unit I got and IMO it kicks ass for the price (10% off right now, and that should cover shipping a lil)

good luck either way M'man

the lumens are about the same and the cfl is a lot cheaper

would you guys suggest the cfl or hps?
Honestly I'm on the same boat as you so I'm sub'd! And ready to see some opinions, I'm leaning towards cfls tho only because I've been using them up till now. But have you thought bout using two 70w hps? Low heat, heard its lower heat then a 200watt cfl..

I use the 250w CFLs in my grow boxes. The boxes are outside in a cold shed. Still manages to take my box from 30-40F to 70-80F.

Wow a 40 degree difference? Do you use exhuast fans at all? I use 2 - 300 watt CFL hoods and my temps stay 5-7 degrees above ambient.

As for CFL vs HPS, I haven't used an HPS before but I imagine you would generate less heat, allowing you to place the light closer to the plants. That means more USABLE light.

One would think cfls are cooler? HPS conduct a lot of heat, i thought.
Along with the closeness? I believe cfls have the HPS beat unless theres a cool tube.

HPS wins hands down every time, but if you wanna grow go 400w Mh/HPS great lume per watt ratio, and you are gonna get ventilation anyways

All about lumens actually grosse. HpS all day op.

Cfls can be used for veg just fine though. A little 4-6 bulb vanity thing is all you need just wire that hoe to an old extension cord and slap some cfls in...

My bad didn't see you said 150w hps, thought they were the same wattage. I'd get a 250w hps...shouldn't be much harder to cool than a 150 but never used lights that small so idk

Yeh I do lol. Short box, direct heat from the bulb mainly.

I do have to slightly slow the air flow down tho or my box will get too cold.

My box is 31" H, 18" L, 26" W, so its pretty small a 250w hps cool tube would do good in that?
Sorry not trying to thread jack!

I'd go with the cfl, 150w HPs suck when 1 ft away ( due to heat)
The cfl can be 1 in away. Have way better par. An no fire worries.

ive ran CMH 145 an 150w hps + 100w cfl in my old cab.
and 400w of induction floro OWNED it.

ps
I'd recomend some hallogen to supplement the floro spectrA.

Hey first-time- I would definitely go with the 250w hps.
Your plants will thank you for it. I've used CFL's with good
results, but the HID Lamps provide the necessary intensity
for big, fat, sticky colas ;-)_~

I feel the same.
My girls get there but I feel like, if I were to switch over to hps the results will drastically change! Don't get me wrong I love cfls!! Big fan, self ballasted all the way! However there not so good for top lighting, leaning more towards only supplement lighting with a hps. Cfls always have to be adjusted, for me multiple times aday.. Drags out to much at the end of the day I can't even stand looking at the girls, I don't wanna feel that way lol.
