150w HPS in Small Cab?

I've got a few questions as i'm mostly in the planning stage right now.

As of right now i'm planning on growing in a small sterilite cabinet or something of a similar size, if I were to get a 150w hps and have the ballast set up remotely, would I be able to keep temps manageable without doing a cool tube or a plexiglass heatshield? If not, would the heatshield/tube be enough to keep it manageable?

Secondly, I would be doing 12/12 from seed to at the very most 3 weeks of vegging, would I be able to veg with the HPS or should I get a few 42w 6500k cfls for that? I'd be doing 2 plants at a time probably.

Any input is appreciated. My ultimate goal is having a good, small, and relatively inexpensive grow setup. 2-4 ozs of quality bud per harvest would be ideal and I dont mind spending some money to do it right but I dont have unlimited funding either.

If I go hps instead of cfls, i'd probably get this bulb

and this ballast

https://www.1000bulbs.com/product/7860/BS-LU0150120.html

Are these quality units or should I look elsewhere?

Any help is appreciated as i've just started looking into hps because I was pretty set on doing all cfls. Up until I started browsing around for hps lights.

Also, i'm pretty handy/mechanically inclined, am I wrong in assuming i'll be able to wire up a ballast on my own? I have wire nuts and a lot of spare wiring of various gauges in the garage.

Bump, anyone? I've done a lot of reading today and everything seems like its fine, I still cant tell if I can veg for a few weeks with hps though.

yes you can veg with hps... but as you stated you could also use the cfl's... you could actually use 2 26 watt cfls to veg.. 1 bulb per plant. i usually just use 1 26watt per plant for the 1st 2-3 weeks then i have to start adding more.. hope this helps

Since you said you have the money buy the HPS. I wouldn't skimp on the bulb though, get an enhanced spectrum grow light not a home depot one.

check out my grow in my sig, i have a 150hps in a small closet/bookcase. i cut a small exhaust fan in the top left corner and hooked up a pc fan that only runs when my 150w is on. i also have a constant fan running 24hrs. im second floor in an old house and my temps are 76-79.......in a small closet air movement is key.

if you get that ballast, keep in mind it needs a case and to be assembled by you or someone who can read a schematic. i was going to get that one that you have listed a while ago. it would have cost me a bit over 150. with everything. and you can get one hell of a shock. i have seen the 150w hps sun system (which i ended up getting) all put together with reflector for 139.00 or you can check ebay.
the 150'sw dont produce tons of heat. if you have a fan, intake fan, and extractor and such the temps should be fine. i use a mix of hid and cfl lighting to great results so far.
hope this helps.

Appreciate the input guys, the thought of wiring up a ballast doesnt scare me much at all, i'm mechanically very handy and have no problems reading a bunch and have a solid understanding of electricity so I think thats something I can tackle. Which bulb would you guys recommend if the one I posted isnt ideal?

I know htg makes a 150w hps kit with everything, would that probably be a better bet than what I intend to do?

Its reasonably priced and I feel like it would significantly outperform cfls, especially in a regular sized cabinet.

For ventilation I was thinking 2-4 35 cfm pc case fans all as exhausts with passive intakes, would that be enough? Theyd be wired to an old toy train transformer which is basically the perfect variable fan speed controller.

I think I might just get that and pick up some dynagro to save on some shipping.

Whats the verdict on superthrive? I know a lot of people like it but is it worth getting?

I have the EYE Hortilux and I love it. What do you plan on growing in? soil or hydro? I heard superthrive works better in soil but I've never messed with it myself.
