175w metal halide 14k

i have asked this question before but i havent gotten an answer. and when i mean an answer information to back up their answer. i know plants in the veg state use more of blue spectrum to grow. so i have a 175w mh light rated at 14k. i know it is on the very blue side and i am wondering if this would be way to much blue or just the wrong light altogether. this light is usualy used to light saltwater reef tanks and i have an extra one so i was hoping to be able to use it for vegging. please dont say go buy a new bulb or just a short answer i am hoping someone can give me some information to back up their answer. i hate when people give answers like no you cant. well explain to me why you cant or can that is much more of a help than a yes or no answer......thanks so much lefty

I've heard rumors that adding UV light(like 14K) at the very end of flowering, will stimulate a sudden burst of trich production. I am not claiming this to be fact, but certainly would like to know if it's true, or not.


Anybody else ever hear about this, or...know if it's bullshit, or not?

you can use that light. it will work great to veg a few plants. if you want proof for yourself, do a google search. the information is so readily available im not going to do any google searches for you. its widely agreed upon that mh bulbs work well for veg and hps for flowering. throw a plant or 2 under it they will grow.

as for uv, it seems to be sound science that uv increases trich production and all that, however i have tried using supplemental uv lighting and didnt notice any difference so i took it out to save $ on power.

throught a plant or 2 under it. i went the fact that you cant add to much light. any light is good light. so now in my flower room i am running a combintion od 175w mh a 150 mh and 6 cfl's that are cool white and 6 cfl's that are day white. so we will see how the plants respond to the lighting

my guess is that 14k number is the lumens, not the CRI
14k would probably be beyond ultraviolet and into x-rays
though some MH bulbs do give off ultraviolet, which is thought to be good for some strains

the 14k is closer to the purple end of the blue. it is usually used to replacate a deep water reef tank in the home aquarium. i use to use metal halide to lght me reef untill the t5 came and made it much easier to keep my water cooler

^^^ interesting, didn't know the kelvin number went that high, seriously high in the blues for sure

oh at your local pet store you can 20k light bulbs for your reef tank. thats why i am wondering if 14k is good. everything i read 2300 for flowering and 6500 for veg and now i double that so is ithat better. would it be like the intensity of 2 lights. hense my confussion. so i fifugred i would just plug it and see what happens. whats the worse that can happen nothing grows well. and on the other hand they could take off growing like weed people claim they are. we soon shall see i just put the light on it today

yeah, i did a quick search and saw those 20k, nothing in the red or green or tiny amounts
so you never know, like you say, well out of my experience with 5500k cfl's for veg, which do veg very well

how it works from my understanding is as the light penitrates the water the reds are filtered out and only the blue spectrum is left to the corals. since corals them selves are realitily a plant they grow best in intense blue lighting. so my thoughts are plants grow best in the blue lighting i am giving them what they need. i would think that thre is so much research done on growing that someone would have already done the work and the answer if a 10k 14k or even a 20k light would be helpful and beifitical to indoor growing. i am wondering if it is possible to go to far blue. where it is over the limits and you actually take away some of the reds the plants do use
