1st CFL Closet grow (PICS)

They are lookin great man. In a few days they will be begging for more water..i made the mistake of underwatering my seedlings starting at day 9.. Keep an eye on em! Great job!

So I just checked online and it seems I have some fungus gnats flying around my closet. Any suggestions? I'm getting flypaper today. Does anyone know of any safe insecticide I can probably pick up locally like walmart or something? Thanks a lot! More updates later tonight

Thanks for your replies. First off, I completely removed the box and now have the lights tied off and hanging from the ceiling in the closet. This will allow me to move the lights more freely and allow for better ventilation. I got a powerful fan in there too now so it's usually staying below 78 F. I decided to wait on the ferts for a few days until they develop just a little more. I am feeding them plain distilled water for the next two times before I feed them some nutes. I also have a small problem with some fungus gnats that have been flying around. I got some fly paper to catch them all, hopefully there aren't any larvae in the soil feeding off the roots. Some of the cotyledons have some brown spots on them...Maybe an early warning sign? Ill be posting pictures in the next two days...things are pretty slow for now.

I also had gnats and after searching a few threads I found a mixture of about 70% water and 30% peroxide will kill them and be completely safe. I used it my last 2 waterings and haven't had any problems with my plants. I killed about 95% of them just find the odd balls flying around.

Good grow... always happy to see CFLs doing a good job.

Here's some pictures (sorry about the quality) of the seedlings and the closet without the box. Also is a photo of the browning on the cotyledons and very minimally on the serrated leaf tips. Any ideas what this could be from? Thanks for the tip for the gnats, I'll try it soon and tell you guys how it goes. I also marked one plant and watered 1 tbsp. Of 1/4 strength nutes so I'll see how that goes and post some results.









Only two of them look like this right now, might be the fungus gnat larvae, not sure though...

I had gnats. I just put a oci-fan on the plants and it was fixed. I guess they couldnt handle the wind lol. Made my stems thicker too.

Lol thats probably a safer/better set up. I have a fan on my plants but it doesn't look like the stems are thickening up but they are standing erect so maybe it is doing something. I stopped using the peroxide after 3 waterings because the gnats were gone and I wanted to give the plants a break from it. 8/9 days old now I do believe nutes on 2 weeks .

Any updates for us jdub?

So a question... What kind of peroxide? Like hydrogen peroxide you use on cuts? Lately its been really hot...about 85 F. Damn heatwave. Not sure what to do right now. I only have one set of lights on currently to save some degrees, about three fans, and a few ice packs. The plants are growing kind of slowly but the second set of leafes are growing in a little bigger on each plant.

1-2 tbsp of 3% H202 per gallon of water. Another thing you can do is fill jugs of water and put them in your freezer and place them around your plants if you have room.

Ok great, thanks for all your help you guys I'd be lost without RIU. Mixed it in this morning and watered each plant 2tbsp (it was dry about two inches down). I've already been putting in some frozen water bottles and ice packs but honestly, even 4 at a time only lowers it a degree or two. Right now it's floating around 86 F. I am getting an air conditioner today so that will definitely help with keeping those temps in my bedroom down. Also, do moths pose a risk? Any egg laying like the gnats? They are flying in my room like crazy for those cfl bulbs. Also, it's been about 9 or 10 days so far on most of the plants and things seem to be going slower than most of the people here on the forum. The second set of leafs are starting to get bigger, about 1/4" on each plant. Day 10 in seemorebuds book are a lot bigger, mine look more like day 6.... Anything to be concerned about? And one more thing... The plants look healthy but the cotyledons are yellow and brown on some of the plants. Are they just naturally dying off or could this be the result of the roots being eaten by fungus gnat larvae? Thanks

I started adding some superthrive to my plants last water they seem to like it and since its not an actual fertilizer I don't think I will get nute burn but I just add about 1/4 mixture to be safe. Its full of vitamins and other things that the plants seem to be enjoying. Maybe thats it. I hope you don't have a rooting problem because of fungus I have no idea what you would be able to do maybe someone else can tell you how to check or how to fix it.

You got fungus gnats.

There are a few different ways to get rid of them.

Their larva need the soil in order to survive so one thing you can do is put a 1in. layer of sand on top of the surface. This is a not a over night fix, all it does is prevent the larva from getting to the soil after they have been layed. Eventually the larva die, the adults die and problem is solved.

You can also use 3-in-one insecticide, fungicide, miticide. This stuff will knock those bugs out the box in a day or two but since your plants are so young might do them damage as well.


My third and final suggestion is diatomaceous earth. Its organic and will kill any bug that walks over it. Tiny fossils that shreds any bug matter that comes upon it. Just dont breath this crap in, comes in a powder form.

Just a quick update. Things are going good, soil was pretty dry so I watered them 1.5 tbsp mixed with some superthrive and h2o2. Temp is about 82. Added another fan fan. Here's a few photos. How do things look for day 10? Thanks!
