1st Time Grow Setup: Complete Grow Newbie!

Hi Rollitup! Please indulge me with your experience and wisdom regarding my first grow setup ever.

Throughout my narrative I pose questions to the audience. I’ve numbered them and reproduced them at the end so you won’t have to go fishing to help me out. Thanks in advance!

The following are my guiding principles:
  • I'm looking to produce at the rate of *1lb every 4 months*.
  • I am a complete newbie, and this is for medical and completely personal use. Also, I don’t have a lot of time on my hands. I’m serious about my medicine, but I'd rather be consuming or engaged in my other pursuits than tending to or optimizing my grow. Even when I get experienced, I want this to be one of the lowest-maintenance grow rigs my budget can afford ($1.3k, more below). Therefore, I will invest in any and all techniques that:
    • Minimize risk of failure.
    • Maximize ease of use.
  • I live in an apartment, so outdoor not an option, and I must minimize odor, even while tending to the plants and doing post-grow prep.
  • I have a closet I can repurpose sized 2’ 3” deep, 5’ 6” wide and 8’ 1” tall. (1) Can I even achieve the rate of 1lb/4mo in a space this size?
  • Strain:
    • Must be amongst the easiest to grow indoors in the world.
    • Must be not wider than 2’3” diameter with no to minimal trimming.
    • Does not have to be short, but 8’ 1” is my limit.
    • I live in the US, so I need to purchase seeds from the right place. I haven’t dived in to the seed forums on Rollitup yet, but I will. (2) Advice beyond read the forum?
  • As for the final product:
    • Out of taste, smell, appearance and effect, the only variable I’m interested is high potency, as I have a high tolerance due to my medical usage pattern. I am willing to sacrifice on other variables if necessary, but I welcome any tips on strains that fit my practical constraints, are highly potent, and have an interesting taste or smell or appearance or effect other than raw potency. I am not interested in being an “artisan” grower, trying things the “old fashioned” way, chasing particular strains or tastes or effects beyond “potent” if it means I have to sacrifice one bit on any of my other guiding principles.
  • My budget is $1,300. I appreciate the monetary and self-confidence value in cheaper DIY solutions, but I am deadly serious about my medicine, so I’m looking to really maximally fit my solution to my principles, which are summarized as: meet my required production rate, minimize risk of failure, maximize ease of use, minimize odor, and fit in my 2’3" closet. I’ll use any technology or novel technique available to maximize satisfaction of those goals. I’ll even consider raising my budget if someone gives me a good case, so you can even say my budget is a “half-principle”.
Having Googled around for all of a couple days, my guiding principles have led me to the below assumptions about the grow setup I require:

Assumptions:
  • Short grow to reduce risk of falling short of 1lb/4mo due to failed crop(s).
  • Autoflowering seeds to reduce risk of grower error regarding lighting.
  • All-female seeds to eliminate the overhead of growing and rejecting males. I haven’t dived in to the seed/strain related forms yet. I’ve looked at Gorilla seeds and they look OK, though I’ve read on another forum that there are more established operations that ship to the US.
  • Hydroponics, because my yield requires it. (3) I’m very unsure of this at the moment, do I really need a hydro kit?
  • To achieve my near-zero smell goal: quality grow tent with high-grade carbon filter for ventilation. I’m still not sure how smelly the post-grow prep process is nor how long it lasts etc, so I’m still not sure how to mitigate that yet. (4) Perhaps another part-time use tent to set up in an extra room and sit in with a prep table when required?
  • Strain should not be Indica-heavy, as these are wide plants. 50/50 blends or pure Sativa should be convenient for the space of my closet, though I’ve read outdoor Sativa can grow over a dozen feet tall; obviously this is too much.
Open questions:
(5) Should I grow my plants on a staggered rotation, or grow all plants together? (6) Which option has less risk of failure if done well and are they as easy to implement or is one more complex/labor-intensive? I’m opting for the safer, easier option.

http://growersguidetocannabis.com/cheap-complete-cannabis-grow-kits/
I found the above system which I think is at least in the ballpark for what I need, but I’ve been told in a separate thread that the hydro kit requires a 4’ x 8’ space which is too big. (7) Is this kit too much for my required rate of 1lb/4mo? That would be good news. Recommendations welcome.

If you’re still with me, here are the questions again:

(1) Closet: 2’ 3” deep, 5’ 6” wide, 8’ 1” tall. Can I even achieve the rate of 1lb/4mo in a space this size?
(2) I live in the US, so I need to purchase seeds from the right place. I haven’t dived in to the seed forums on Rollitup yet, but I will. Any advice beyond read the forum?
(3) Hydroponics, because my yield requires it (I am very much unsure of this one at the moment, please confirm or reject this assumption especially).
(4) Post-grow (smell): Perhaps another part-time use tent to set up in an extra room and sit in with a prep table when required?
(5) Should I grow my plants on a staggered rotation, or grow all plants together? Is this question answered for one if one choses hydro?
(6) Which option from question (5) has less risk of failure if done well and are they as easy to implement or is one more complex/labor-intensive? I’m opting for the safer, easier option.
(7) Is this kit too much for my required rate of 1lb/4mo? That would be good news. Recommendations welcome. http://growersguidetocannabis.com/cheap-complete-cannabis-grow-kits/

I appreciate any attempt to answer my questions and to confirm or reject any of my assumptions or even if you think any of my guiding principles should be rethought to better achieve my goals.

Esteemed regards,
rothkko

your are a 100% noob with no planting skills or any background ...........with the no fail option Hydro is out

Hydro is much more complex then soil and any mistake or unforeseen problem and poof everything is off under yields and sad times .........hydro is not a smart choice for a starter ....soil is much safer
in the spirit of making this simple and for u to always get a good return i am going to list things out ......price it out and see what u like
soil .........this is super soil feeding is unneeded but it does increase the end product denseness
https://ideal420soil.com/cannabis-soil/shop
feed organic line .........organic feed in soil makes it mush simpler for u no flushing or PH issues (just use water 6.5ph or within .3 of that)
http://www.amazon.com/General-Hydroponics-Organics-Go-Box/dp/B004PS4B08
to make it simpler to mix feeds order pipettes 1 ml and 3 ml (i got the 500 count 2 year still good)
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=pipettes&sprefix=pipet,aps
Planters.........i like fabric soil bags over watering is nearly impossible and if something does go wrong flushing to fix is easy..plus air prunes roots no balling
http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-Dirt-Pot-7-Gallon/dp/B004S0KVCK/
the carbon filter to hide the fact u are grown .......these guys are refillable so u reuse the metal just replace the active carbon
http://www.ebay.com/usr/foothill-carbon-filters?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2754

your ?s
1 i can not tell u missing info for a correct answer for it the X'X' (is that 10 or missing info)
2...attitude seed bank was nice but sage pay got bitchy .......herbies is doing it well and smart (but not resent policy)
3 hydro is out of the ? with u only 1300 and new grower ........hydro takes the most gear and is least forgiving on mistakes
4 setting a tent up to dry it is a smart idea i do it (easier to control the area to get a good dry)
5 with u going auto stagger them so u are pulling in once a month (use your area effective for different strains plus increase learning curve for u)
6 stagger us simpler u have a routine u fallow the major work is trimming and jarring up other then that water feeding once every 2 days
7 the kit is not worth it not for u at this time

your lights
cheapest to start is Hid with a cooltube ........Solis tek matrix ballast or Galaxy grow ballast
downside of this the air and area gets hot so u need a much higer CFM rating and u need to have your intake temps controlled more (AC)
a 1000w will get u some good buds

if u decide u can go LED i like the matrix S light (i can link u a makers web page order from them save u 400 bucks or more)
this reduces the heat by alot .........the power of depth into the plant improves (less fluffy buds)

@justugh Big thanks for the recos on gear. I'll take a bit to digest the info on that.

5 with u going auto stagger them so u are pulling in once a month (use your area effective for different strains plus increase learning curve for u)

Thanks for the suggestion for stagger since I'm doing autoflowering. Could you shed some light on using my area to be effective for different strains, and what do you mean by increase learning curve? Do you mean that by going auto or stagger or both I'm increasing my learning curve? I am currently assuming auto is supposed to be easier since you don't have to deal with the lighting complexities of a flowering cycle.

6 stagger us simpler u have a routine u fallow the major work is trimming and jarring up other then that water feeding once every 2 days

This is awesome advice thank you. Any links on Rollitup or externally for the grow routine for someone like me who wants low-maintenance? I literally don't even know how long it would take one plant to grow.

Cheers,
rothkko

This assumes I require hydro right? Do you think I need hydro for 1lb every 4mo?
image.jpg
Soil 50/50 soil perlite mix
U could also do hempy buckets u don't need do dwc
That setup 6
3 to 6 gal pots with a decent yielding strain
U could easy pull 1 pound
I can pull 12 oz in 4 months with. 400w light and a smaller tentimage.jpgSame grow in soil

Sounds good, let me confirm: so for my closet that's 2’ 3” deep, 5’ 6” wide, 8’ 1” tall, I can pull 1lb every 4mo with 6 pots? Can you reco a tent for those dimensions?

hey

the size of space yes .........u will need to do the plant in a a row
2 plants large ones ......small 4 maybe 5
large plants i give a 2.5x 2.5 feet in the floor plant
small ones normally 1x1 or 1.5x1.5

staggering them ........it lets u grow different strains at the same time ......with different end days
i had a 4x4 set up using the front part for veggie and the back for flowering ........when u stagger the start times u are able to put a small just starting plant into one that is coming out in a week (the one coming out in the week is soaking most of the light up ) when u remove it it gives the one starting to flower the spot light and room to do her thing

with auto plants .........u have control on the size just with the genetics (some plants will only get 2/3 feet high with 120 grams others will get 5 feet high with 300-600 grams a plant)

as for the feeding ......on the go box is a standard plan u can fallow for the line .........but every soil is different along with every strain and every environment so nothing anyone can tell u about feeding other then start with the basic plan and read the plant altering the feeding as need pushing the plants power with every round of growing

a 600w will do u fine (look at the info rem they are showing it in Meters not feet)
just allow all scripts on the left hand side this little box fallows u as u go down ........i ordered from Kevin (nice guy) talk with him it is safe u can be open and free about (they are in HK) u will pay for the light shipping and import taxes (i got 2 600w lights and 2 controllers for the price of 1 900w sold here )....shipping is fedex

great lights they have 3 modes veggie flowering UV ...all in one light...........with autos u are looking at 48 grows before the light dies

when u want u can mess with the lights and play with the light waves/intencey/timing

they did my sale tho paypal ..........they will sell u 1 light or 1000 they only ask u do not tell the price out to ppl on places like here as they are the marker not a retailer (they do not want to piss off the retailers )

no it is not but the cost of the gear to get it going is up there ........and for a first timer with a can not fail option .....DWC is not the right choice

to many variables for a new grower that does not know how to read the plant to alter the feed
plus the gear to do it right and least work is up there a water chiller ......upgrade air stone to micro pore defuser .....auto pher .......RO filter for water

the one thing i did not see the kit he posted offering was the PH up and PH down for it i did see a tester but not the calibration solution .....and they are offering nothing for the microbos it was only a 3 part grow bloom micro (he has nothing for root slime not to talk about with increasing the feed intake)

His budget is 1300. it could be done. He doesn't need RO, he doesn't need a chiller , fuck micro pore .
Man I started out in dwc and did fine with shitty conditions.
All these people suggesting the first time grower shouldn't do hydro don't take certain things into consideration.

oh guy

if u got the room aye go for a tent ...........i use a 3 tent system
3x3x5 for drying (carbon filter/fan..humidifier..dehumidifier .....fan inside tent to move air )
4x4x6 veggie tent ( 600w led 240 cfm power intake 240 cfm exhaust)
5x5x6 flowering tent ( 600w and 2 300w leds 240 cfm powered intake with Co2 added and a 260 cfm exhaust tho carbon filter)

the tent system controls the smell effectively .........i grow year round

dwc can do great ......but he is a frist timer with a can not fail option on the table
