1st Time Super Stealth Grow Box 2x Fem. Northern Lights.

Hi all, this is my first attempt at growing. Well, actually its my second because I don't count my first plant which was just bag seed I was experimenting with. But now, I believe that I know enough and I'm ready to go all in!

I have 2 Feminized Northern Lights plants that are about 2 weeks old now. Both are in FFOF soil and I will be using the FF nutes as well. Pics coming soon! The main reason I chose this strain was because the smell from this strain is supposedly less than that of other strains. Also, I needed something that was a small indica. I got the seeds from attitude seeds and they came in about 2 weeks to the U.S.

I am growing in a small stealth grow box that I got off eBay for 150 bucks. It is just a small wooden box that's 24 inches tall, about 16 inches wide and 10 deep. It is covered in reflective Mylar and has 2 fans. The bottom is for intake and the top is exhaust. I got those cheap carbon filters and taped them on the back for odor control and just to block the light that escapes through the fans. Also, my plan for odor control is to get a few of those ONA blocks and place them in and near my grow box. I was able to squeeze 5 CFL's into the box. 4 of them are 75w 6500k and 1 is 100w 2700k. The total lumens are about 6000 which I believe will be sufficient for vegging.

Questions, coments or concerns will be greatly appreciated. Let me know what I am doing wrong or right because I am still trying to learn the ropes. Thanks and enjoy!

So this is where my plants are at currently. They are both about 2 weeks old however Mary, the bigger plant is much bigger than her counterpart, Jane. Yes the names are cheesy but oh well. Anyways, they are both still recovering from a 4 day power outage due to a storm that hit the east coast but I am glad to say that both survived. Now for the Pics! And also, for now on I will be updating every week now that I am caught up.

The only thing that happened to the plants while they were without light was that all the new growth was yellow but that went away soon after the power went back on. Also on Mary's lowest leaf set, they are starting to get brown around the leaf tip and have a few yellowish/ brown spots. I am hoping that this just has to do with the plant not having light for a while. So far, it doesn't seem like it is getting any worse. Here are pics of that.

5 Brown Spot Defficiency.jpg

So, my questions are, first, are the spots on Mary caused by when the power was out and second, I have heard that irregularity in the light cycle can cause female plants to hermie later on so do you think there is a high chance of this even though its so early on in vegging. Once again, all comments, concerns or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Nice setup buddy :) are those real watts or the equiv? and the spots appear to be either heat issues or slight nute burn. Also is that a clear pot?! if so wraps some black tape around it or something, roots dont like light. Im subbed:D

an ona block should get rid of most of the smell. Thats a nice tidy set up, good luck with your grow

They are the equivilant watts. I believe the real watts are around 25. And I don't think its nute burn because I haven't started with any nutes yet and its only in the bottom 2 leaves. Or do you think that its nute burn from the Ocean Forrest soil? I think that when the power was out they just started to get some kind of a deficiency because so far, it hasn't gotten any worse. And yes, they are clear pots but I have already painted them black. Thanks for the interest man!

Nice setups, and I thought your choice of names are pretty funny. cheesy or not. lol

I'm also on first, actually 2nd, small box grow as well.

I'm having temperature issues possibly. What's the temp in your box? Same everywhere or varies high, low, or close to lights? Mine is over 90 close to lights which I think could be trouble.

And how close do you keep lights to leaves? Mine is about 2 inches. Is distance from light not as important if you have plenty of bright light and right spectrum?

I'm not using the 6500K because there were none in stock when I picked up all the other stuff to build my box, so I'm using 3 26W 2700K, but I want the cool spectrums running at 5600K - 6500K, if I can find them. Where did you get your 6500K lights. Came with box, online or at a store?

Yeah, I never thought about what would happen when power goes out. I live east coast too but the storm didn't do much here, but power went out for almost a week last Halloween with that crazy ass ice storm in October.

Good that Mary and Jane survived and didn't go all albino with no light on you..lol.

So far I have not had any heat issues. But the air temperature of the room where the box is in is about 70 degrees so all the air that the intake fan brings in is pretty cool. Up towards where the lights are the temps get in the high 80's but down where the plant is, it stays around 75. The main concern I originally had with this box was that the lights could not be height adjusted. But so far, they haven't stretched at all or seemed to be not having enough light. And I got the lights included with the box but you could easily get them for cheap on eBay or other places. As for your grow, I think those 2700k lights will be fine for now. I've heard of people who did their whole grow with 2700k lights and they did alright, even though the 6500k would have been better. Good luck! And do you have any pictures of your plants? I would be interested to see them.

Thanks.

Yeah, the room mine is in is too warm, about 80', so that is not providing any cool air intake. I just leave the window open usually, but I have another AC I could install in that room with a little work. It's one of those slide sideways windows which I'd have to completely remove and patch with plexiglass or plywood. I dunno, I'll try just leaving that door open and let the cooler air from the living room flow in there, and see if that helps.

I used the metal box that housed the drives from the pc guts I ripped out and a book to elevate the plant closer to the lights, about 2 inches away. Interesting that you've found no light proximity problems. I'll try a farther distance b/c that would solve the heat issue. Actually, I had another plant placed lower, but I moved it up closer this morning.

No pics yet. I suck at pic taking and uploading.

Good luck to you too!

Hello all. My plants are currently in Week 2 Day 5 of vegging. Mary was almost on her 5th node so I decided to top her today. I am planning to veg them out until week 4 or 5 and them put them into flower. They are both growing well, but Jane is still growing slower than Mary. Here are the pics.

I will be updating again in a few days showing everyone how the topping worked out!

As of today, Mary is still struggling due to her topping that I did 2 days ago. She is still very droopy but I believe that is normal after topping. Jane is doing much better too. I started feeding her with Fox Farms Grow Big nutrient a few days back so I think it is helping. Here are the pictures. Mary is on the right, and Jane is on the left.

I have a few questions. First, am I correct that it is normal for plants to be very droopy after topping and how long will they stay like this. Also, since I am planning to veg my plants for another 2 weeks until flowering, should I be concerned with them becoming root bound? All input is greatly appreciated. Enjoy!

Hello, Mary and Jane are both now 4 weeks and 3 days old. They are both about 6 inches tall and are doing very well. The top that I did on Mary worked out very well and she is very bushy and for Jane, although I didnt top her, she is also doing well. In a few hours, I am going to put them into a 24 hour dark period to enduce them into flowering. Also, I will take my vegging bulbs out and put my flowering bulbs in. I am going to have about 8000 lumens for flowering which is up from the 6000 I had for vegging.

And for odor control, I still have small carbon filters on my fans as well as the ONA Block inside of the box. Here are the pictures from when they were exactly 4 weeks old.

Hello all, earlier today I took my vegging bulbs out and replaced them with my flowering bulbs. Unfortunantly, I was only able to fit 4 CFL's into the box for flowering because they were bigger than the vegging ones. Total lumens are about 7000 which is still up from the 6000 I had for vegging. Now in flowering, the light schedule is now 12/12. Also, my top exhaust fan has stopped working but the lower intake fan is still working fine. I have no idea what happened to it but I have contacted the seller of the box to see what can be done. Here are the pictures.

For nutrients, I will still be using Fox Farms Grow Big for another week and then I will be changing to Fox Farms Big Bloom. Luckily, since I started with feminised seeds, I don't have to worry about them being male. Comments are still greatly appreciated. Enjoy!!! :leaf::leaf::leaf:

hey man looks pretty cool and i was actually wonderin how the ona blocks are workin for you so far? Thanks
So far, I am really liking the ONA block. All of the air that is pulled out trough the exhaust fan has the fresh smell of the ONA but it isn't too strong. I actually like the smell of it. But for as far as how well it works at killing odors, I won't be able to tell for sure until the buds start forming.

Hello all. Today marks the end of week 1 of flowering. Both plants showed their first pistils within the first few days after switching to 12/12. I beleieve that they showed their sex fast due to the 24 hour dark period that was done before changing to flowering.I topped Mary, the plant on the right but since this was my first grow, I didnt want to top both and risk messing up both plants. Mary's topping worked out great and I am regreting not doing it on both but I will now be able to see what a huge difference it makes wheather or not you top.

I also added a small 75 watt equivilent 6500k bulb to the bottom of the box to try and get some light to the lower budsites because I was worried about light not being able to pennetrate through the canopy. Now there is about 8000 lumens of light in the box which is only about 1.5 sqaure feet so that is 5000 lumens per sqaure foot.

For nutrients I started using Fox Farms Big Bloom and Tiger Bloom both at 1/3 strength. I switch off between nutes and plain water every other watering. Currently, I am watering every 2-3 days. Heres the pics.

Lookin good. Might turn off the light for pics I think that's why your leaves don't have that deep green color In pics. I do have one question what breeder you using for northern lights? Has it started to smell yet?
