99% of the time i dont give a fuck about the ground, unless its needed for operation.

Grounds are so fucking redudnant, you already have one, its your neutral.

dude i just lost a Wii, my dvd surrond sound and fried a cable box because my surge protector failed because my outlet was not properly grounded, so i would ground the sh!t out of your setup you dont want to risk all the money you put into lights because your to lazy to run a frigen cable to a mental box

After inspecting all the outlets in the house, the only ones grounded are on the gfci in the kitchen. Most of the outlets are 3 prong but none of them are grounded (except kitchen of course).

If I happen upon any pipes upstairs I'll try the gfci tester on them like mrmadcow suggested, otherwise I'm just not going to worry about it. From how I understand it right now, the extra ground is only there for equipment protection since the circuit breaker already protects against fire. Since nothing in my house is grounded, what's one more peace of equipment? I'm already in the red if lightning strikes.

dude your wii , surround sound and cable box , more then likely , would have fried anyways. When you get a surge THAT strong , you have a better chance with a GOOD ground but still thats just a chance. I just lost my computer and modem WITH a good ground. A battery backup is the only REAL way to protect your equipment. and 2 or 3000 watt battery backups are hard to come by.
