If a 1000w de hps covers a 4x4ft-4.5-4.5ft area, without creating hotspots, how many lights would you need to cover a 20x20ft canopy?
Would it be 28? Or would that be over kill? 24 maybe?

See, but then I thought it was like 25-50w per sq ft so I was thinking maybe 20 lights. Just a little confused. I was leaning more towards the 20 light tho

Sounded like you wanted 60w/sq-ft with the 1000w/4x4 formula, so if you don't want that, then let's work in the reverse and let us know what watt per square foot you're after.

Do any of you use the pattern overlay with the lights? I’m used to a 4 light area of plants. Since I’m adding more in a certain space I’m trying to find the optimal amount of lights for that area.

So like 16-17 Gavita de’s are putting about 50-60w / sq ft? For a 20x20 area at least?
On high wattage setting they are able to cover 24 sqft.

20x20 = 400
400 / 24 = 16.67 lights minimum.

Problem is the odd number and spacing so I would probably go with an even number of lights.
