250W Coco SCrog Question. 5 weeks into flower

Ive got a quick question for all you scrog experts...im 5 weeks into flowering and everything is going great, but my canopy is becoming incredibly dense with fan leaves. I was curious if its ok to trim a few fan leaves to allow for better airflow through the canopy or am i better off just letting them go?

thanks in advance

Don't go too crazy though. I got heav handed with my trimming and stunted things badly on my last grow...

I am by no means a pro, but I just did a trim on my scrog.. so guess I'll chime in.
Was noticing a huge lack of airflow and early signs of powdery mildew in the middle of the scrog. I went through and trimmed all of the large, long stemmed fan leaves off. Leaving behind all of the short stemmed leaves near the tops of the buds. Upon doing so, I discovered numerous bud sites that were previously hidden from the light.
Now there's plenty of airflow, and plenty of light penetration down to the screen.
But like I said, I'm no pro. So this may be a perfect example of "going too crazy".

If airflow is a problem I said add another fan, not trim fan leaves. The whole trimming fan leaves to let more light in is bogus IMHO... The fans leaves are what absorb the light and process it so without leaves there is no photosynthesis and without that u have no growth. If they're green leave em be. Just my .02

Doesn't look like you went too crazy there. I did way worse...lol

I agree with southsacboy, it's the fan leaves that, through photosynthesis, crank out the flowers. No arguing that. But... I noticed that if you can get some light directly on the buds further in the canopy they seem to get denser, like the tops do. That density adds weight.

The thing is though, trimming too much in the bloom phase can cause stress that stunts (as it did in my case) and lessens potency, some would argue. Energy that could be used in flower making is gone to healing. So somewhere there has to be a balance. Trim enough to add some density, but try not to stress the girls. I have yet to find that sweet spot and so... now I tend not to trim at all past 4 weeks of flower and I LST instead. Maybe next round, I'll do one of each. Train one, lightly trim one, crazy trim another and see how they compare at the end.

exactly what this guy said... leaves are there for a reason...i dont do none of that pruning bull

I guess the best thing to would be to do a side by side for urself... I just can't bring myself to hack up my healthy plants, not even for experimental purposes. So I guess ill never truly know unless I do it for myself.

I just can't bring myself to hack up my healthy plants..

I was the same way when it came to topping/cropping. Couldn't bring myself to cut off a perfectly healthy growth point. But sometimes, it's just for the greater good.
