250w HPS bulb with a 400w HPS ballast?

the only reason it would be too hot is if you dont have a strong enough exhaust the 250w will work but will run brighter and hotter than normal and will burn out very quickly (possibly straight away i know jimmy130380) plus you get twice the lumens with a 400w

Could someone explain the reasoning behiind the "WTF NO!" and "OMG!!!1!!1" replies? The ballast (or any transformer) would not dictate the power consumption of connected components right? I know it doesn't with any I have seen. If anything I would expect damage to the ballast if it is not capable of running at a significantly low er load than its rated max (as it would produce more heat)?

The point of the ballast is that it specifically regulates the current flowing from the socket on the wall into the bulb tho...so wouldnt it just blow the bulb straight away?
