250watt cfl vs 250watt hps? input needed in new grow box

Hiya,

I'm currently making my first grow box, its quite small, the dimensions are something like 0.5 x 0.8 x 1.2 meters, or 1.5 x 2.5 x 4 feet.

To ventilate the area im going to use 2x 120mm pc fans as a exhaust and passive intake, the fans can run at two speeds either 21.5 CFM or 36 CFM. Which would give an airflow of maximum 72 CFM.

the box is a totalt of 15 cubic feet which gives almost 5 airchanges per minute when the fans are on full speed and roughly 2.5 airchanges per minute when on low speed.

correct me if my math is wrong by the way!

i plan on scrogging in the box and i will make the passive intake holes beneath the scrog screen to get as much airflow through the plant as possible, the exhaust will be at the top of the box.

I will be growing two lowryders and one larger plant(not sure of which one yet northern lights or a cheese i think) in two DWC buckets.

now to the question, im currently in the middle of ordering lights for this box, and im considering a 250w CFL with a reflector etc, but i would prefer a 250w HPS but im not sure if the heat will be a problem with the HPS light? i know ambient temperature is important but is my box even close to beein able to handle a hps light?

the hps lights dont make any sound right? or the ballast?

any ideas for a lighting solution would be appreciated.

I can unfortunatley not increase the ventilation as there is no room and i want to keep the system as quiet as possible as it will be in my bedroom, hopefully the fans will live up to their 9 / 19 decibel promise!

peace!

Configured correctly the 250w hps will do just fine, you have 4 feet of height. I would use the hps myself. the hps ballast makes very little noise, you wont hear it over the fans.

Check out the thread in my sig. I was using about 220 watts of cfls, then i switched to a 250 watt hps so you can see both in action lol. for the hps ull need a fan blowing on the ballast to keep it cool, that way you can keep the bulbs closer to your plants for better light penetration. Im not sure if 4 feet is enough to support an HPS light though, id probably go with the cfls if i were you

I respect your opinion, but i disagree with 2 points of your post.

Blowing air on the ballast wont allow you to have the light closer to the plants, although it will cool your ballast.

Secondly, 4 feet of height is plenty, take a look at some scrog grows just as one example.

i started up my two 120mm fans, and to be honest, they were ridiculously quiet, i stuck my ear to one and i couldnt hear a sound, so the possibility is there to add on a third one if needed.

i was goin to keep the balast on the outside of the grow box, the temperature there shouldnt be an issue?

im probably going to get this kit:

does those reflectors come with hooks on the back of them so you can hang them up or do i need additional fittings?

cheers for the help so far ! :)

just ordered a 250w hps light and a third 120mm fan, hopefully combined with the scrog i should be alright! just started to get paranoid that i wont have enough room hehe..

will be growing a dutch passion white widow, a big buddah blue cheese and a la diva automatic. if it turns out i dont have enough headroom for the plants i can allways grow a bunch of lowryders hehe

cheers for the input!

Don't get a reflector, get a cool tube! otherwise your cab will get way too fucking hot for pc fans to keep it cool. HPS burn at up to 500F!!
