I have been doing some research into maximising my plants THC potential! apparently if I add a UVB tube or 2 to my grow cupboard, I am thinking for side lighting around the same height as the cola's, the plant/s will pack on THC to protect herself from burning and in doing so will render my ladies with upto a 20% gain in THC I have made a few calls and can get a 20w 60cm (23.5") UVB tube for 16 Quid, and the fixture for 22 Quid, so for 1 complete unit, just under 40 Quid! I' probably get 2 for even distribution of the UVB ray, so 80 Quid will cover. At present I am unsure wether to use them with my 2X 90W LED UFOS, and 2X MINI FLURESCENTS, and my 125W ENVIROGROW LIGHT, or wether to use them in the night time, with the other lights off and either way ... how long they need to be running for?!! so before I take the plunge I want to be sure on the exacts, of bennifitting from the use of them! If anyone has any info on UVB and or has used them got any pics and good or bad comments etc.. please leave a reply here.. as this is new to me too :) and 20% gain in THC could be the making of some absolute hardcore bud, If I grow a strain renown for high THC production anyway, then give the best nuits I can find, whilst grow in a DWC setup, and super boost it with, BUD CANDY, CANNA-BOOST,BLOOMBASTIC and CHA-CHING, a 20% THC gain from a UVB lamp, could be the crucial making of some serious HYBRID bud that surpasses its own genetics, 2 different strains cross breeds and then its baby with the same treatment I am sure would be close to growing pure THC :) and the HASH made from them will be divine, ok am off to the shops now to take measurements and find out how much heat they emmit, all comments welcome - STELTHY
Just made another call and turns out that these UVB tubes run via an external ballast:lol:..... so next to no heat emmiting from the tubes :) :blsmoke: I still need to know how long to run them for?? and wether to run them in conjunction with my other lights or to have the UVB's on in the plants night time ( during 12 hours of darkness) ?? - STELTHY:leaf:

Slow down stelthy my man. Not trying to be a downer but your formula that you are using is working. Why change now? I love this thread and just wanted to give my 2c worth. My plant growing is certainly nothing to get excited about but i have read loads and have never heard this. I am sure you already know, but if you lower the humidity a fair bit it causes a lot more resin production to occur to block in moisture. Maybe only good for hash...? I would stick to what you have going. Is there a site that confirms your thinking? Please, oh please look after those beautiful plants.

I know ur not trying to bring me down :) But as with everthing I get interested in I get obssesive :) And keep wanting to improve, the 2 ladies I have growing.. originaly were just tester's to see if my setup would work..it did:) !! I am still waiting on my bloody thermostat so I can control humidity, I gave up on the idea of a dry ice fogger as it promotes mould, even though its great for co2, so I installed a co2 regulater and distributer, (its manualy opperated - since timers are super expensive 500 quid area) this works well! I will be making several grades of hash but 1st I plan to half harvest the top section of J.H then revert both Jack Herer and Skunk/Cheese back to veg for a week or two, then force them both back into flower after 48hrs of darkness to bud-up the lower sections and gain the maximum yield my 2 lovelies can offer, the idea of super charging the THC production excites me:bigjoint: , and since I am experimenting still, I see this as a worthy use of my time, I will take every care to ensure the health and vitality of these ladies and if their health deteriates during the use of UVB then I shall refrain from using them further, Trust me I'll look after them! I take it your impressed by what I've achieved so far?? :mrgreen:, depending on how long my thermostat takes to arrive, the arrival of my co2 cannister upgrade, and the day I take the plunge and buy these UVB lamps, I may save my urges for trial n error for my next grow?!! so chances are I ll harvest with the set-up I have so far, then experiment further with my next grow, I will Probably grow ALEGRIA + SHARK BREATH on my next go, please write back with any comments REP:roll:, or questions, cheers buddy - STELTHY:leaf:

Mobark et al., (197 suggested that the high-altitude environment was responsible for an increased population of propyl cannabinoids in plants grown in 1300m. The average total cannabinoid content of wild, mature (flowering) Indian C. sativa from elevations between 250m and 1000m was 2.43% (by dry weight); between 1000 m and 2000m was 3.01%; and above 2000m Was 1.39% (Turner et al., 1979). The cannabinoid content in four out of five of these mature Indian C. sativa variants decreased when grown at sea level in Mississippi, USA. One likely factor which may be of significance to cannabinoid production in both high-altitude and tropical environments is ultraviolet radiation. page 202 Pate (1983) reported that C. sativa populations originating from high UV-B environment contained little or no cannabidiol (CBD) but high levels of delta 9 - tetrahydrocannabinol (delta 9 - THC), while the opposite was true for population from low UV-B environments, and proposed that the two distinct C. sativa chemotypes (drug and fiber) evolved as a result of selective pressures brought about by UV-B radiation. Fairbairn and Liebmann (1974) reported that the delta 9 - THC content of leaf tissue from UV irradiated greenhouse-grown drug-type C. sativa was 23% greater than non- irradiated greenhouse-grown plants. However, neither the spectral distribution nor the daily dose of UV radiation . The objectives of this study were to test (a) The physiological and morphological insensitivity of both the drug and fiber types of C. sativa to UV-B radiation; and (b) to correlate this insensitivity with a change in production of delta 9 - THC or CBD in drug and fiber type plants, respectively. Material and Methods Page 203 Results....Only the delta 9 THC content in leaf and floral tissues of drug type plants increased significantly with UV-B radiation. page 204 Discussion page 205 The results presented here indicate that both types of vegetative C. sativa are physiologically and morphologically insensitive to UV-B radiation. The increased level of delta 9 - THC found in leaf tissues upon UV-B irritation may account for this insensitivity on the drug type plants. However, fiber-type plants showed no comparable change in the level of CBD which has similar UV-B absorption characteristics). Thus, the contribution of cannabinoids to the UV-B insensitivity in vegetative C. sativa is equivocal. Perhaps the background levels of CBD present in the fiber-type tissues were sufficient to protect the plant from UV-B radiation. Alternatively, other UV-B absorbing compounds such as flavonoids may account for this UV-B insensitivity. Flavonoids are the principle pigments associated with UV radiation greening in plants . Barrett et al (1985) reported the concentration of Cannflavin A (a flavonoid from C. sative) was similar in drug and fiber type leaf tissue, whereas Gellert et al (1974) reported relatively more flavonoids in drug than fiber type plants. Whether the quality and quantity of flavonoids in leaf tissues of the chemotypes in this study were sufficient to account for observed UV-B insensitivity was not determined. It should be pointed out, however that one should be cautions when extrapolating from greenhouse to field conditions in UV-B studies. In addition, when considering the distribution of C. sativa, one cannot overlook the fact that it is one of the oldest cultivated plants known to man. Thus, its present distribution may possibly be an artifact of man's cultural practices. In conclusion, the delta 9 THC content in leaf and floral tissues of greenhouse grown drug-type C. sativa increased linearly with UV-B dose. Other cannabinoids in drug and fiber-type plants were unaffected by UV-B radiation. Both drug and fiber chemotypes were physiologically and morphologically tolerant to UV-B radiation.

The estimates below is my own estimations based on article mentioned below and actual research on the matter.

My estimated conclution: "Add 2 x 23w UVB lights / m2 to your grow room and increase THC levels up to 30% in buds."

Read this science article regarding UVB lights effect on drug type cannabis originated from high heigted tropical areas with highly elevated UVB levels. In experiments with plants they have shown an increase of THC concentration levels in leaves from in a range from 22% - 48% depending on UVB intensity. In flower trichomes they got an increase between 15% - 32%. Thats staggering news! Now, this is laboratory conditions with UVB lights flitered to emitt in 300 nm wavelenght UVB light. It's widely known that THC UVB absorption properties range between 280 - 315 nm, so that is important. There's no longer any doubt in my mind that UVB boosts the THC potency of drug type cannabis, and that dont having UVB light is not realising the full potential of our dear plants! Time for a change imho!

What id like to do is to get an estimate on how indoor growers could reproduce this results at home. To get an estimate on what lights, how much lights, and so on, wich could be beneficial. According to the scientists they used 240w UVB, but i dont know on how big of an area. The scientists says that 13,4 KJ / m2 is the level of UCB used in their trials, and that is as much as the UVB levels in 3000m altitude in mountains where strong marijuana is found to grow. According to the article marijuana grown in these UVB rich areas has a 33% increased THC content compared to the same marijuana grown at sea level.

Looking at wikipedia, i found that 1w = 3600 J (3,6KJ), but that seems a bit high compared to the ammount used by scientists, so I devided it to 0,36 KJ instead thinking i made some error somewhere. If i divide 240w (amount UVB scientist used) in 5m2, i get roughly 72w/m2, wich is around 14KJ according to my estimates, and that fits exactly and seems to be a fair estimate, so i think im on the right track here! Then, a 13w UVB light would give 4,5 KJ. Thats what i use, and that seems a bit lesser than needed. 2 x 23w UVB / m2 in the right spectrum should to the trick to produce massively strong cannabis with approximately up to 30% increased THC production in buds! I noticed the UVB bulb I use has the perfect spectrum for cannabis, repti glo 10.0. They come in 13w and 23w strength, and is avalible in sorted zoo shops.

It need to be stressed that UVB light is harmful to humans and plants that dont have developed defences to it (like cannabis has). When having such a bulb in the grow room, it need to be switched of when entering to room. Cancer is a known effect of UVB light exposure.

Jack Herer is now 38 inches tall and filling out nicely, I found a new nuitrient today to harden the buds but at 100 quid I will get it for my next grow, a tad pricey but with weight and density in favour, I'd be a fool not to buy it - STELTHY

Ok I have been busy, creating a good thermostat build for my growroom, I finaly got a thermostat, I have a thread devoted to just that part and I'am still working on it! I hope to update my pics on this thread in the up n coming week/s with good info too:) and also finish this little task too, not long till Harvest keep with me peeps!... I wanna make hash, and my Jamaican Rum Tinture - NOW!!! lol and I cant wait to see how much these plants give me :) Nor can I wait to start my next grow with a 250/400w HPS, am all in favour of experimenting to find the best bullshit free lighting! I plan to keep my other lights too, but wanna experiment more .. and save money :) - STELTHY :)

Stelthy i have an idea for ya. 4 months in the UK summer then move to Australia for 8 months. Would solve your heat issues. Well the 8 months in Aus would anyway.

This actually looks better than some 250w HPS grows Ive seen in the past...I am thinking my next grow will be a 400w HPS, I want to compare density but for the some what bruised rep of LED's I am doing pretty fuckin well wouldn't you say? - STELTHY

I will ad more pics n info soon, I really want to sort out my bloody thermostat, if I cant get it working right on this grow ill defo. have it ready for the next, I may just put the heater on a timer for its night cycle and watch how long it takes to get the dark room up to 26oC and then set the timer to that period of time till harvest time! - STELTHY, ps comments etc please :)

I cant wait to see the increase in size in the next couple of weeks! Ill prob start flushing in the 3rd week, unless i can milk it for another week just for extra size and potancey :) but dont wanna leave it to long, also I am tempted to try a 'strawberry' or 'blueberry' flavoured flush solution I currently use 'dry-flower4' which is great anyhow, oh has anyone used ROX?? its a nuit that makes the buds really hard n dence!?? - STELTHY:leaf:

This is the smallest of Jack Herer's cola's I may replace the 125w ENVIROGROW light with either the 150w or 250w ENVIROGROW light depending on what my temps allow me to do :), still, It's a nice pic.... BUD ON BUD! - STELTHY
