2x4 setup, 320XL HLG, pot size question

Hey everyone. My last grow with a 380W blurple yielded 2oz per plant for a total of 6ozs with about 4 weeks veg time. I'm swapping out the blurple for a 320W XL HLG LED with Samsung Diodes.

Im attempting to do a SoG and I currently have 8 seedlings. I'm doing soil with a mix of happy frog and ocean forest and super soil concentrate at the bottom of the pots.

1 What size final pots should I use 2 or 3 gal? And will the 320W HLG be able to yield half a pound to an entire pound off that?

I have a 2x2.5 tent and can cram 4 in 2 gallon smart pots in there. No idea if i could do the same with 3 gallon ones.
1 oz per plant seems reasonable for a sog, if all goes well.
You have a pretty long space to be filling with that light so you are going to be basically limited by its footprint. With the same wattage, i yield about 4 oz. Most i ever do is one plant with a month or so veg.

Yeah I was thinking of doing 2 gallons but I want to yield at least 2oz per plant

First off, 8 plants in a 2x4 is not really a SOG. That is just 8 small plants in 8 sq. ft. I am doing something similar to that with 6 plants in a 2x3 cabinet. Think of a SOG as being as many 2 liter bottles fit in your area, which would be 50+ plants in your tent. Premium SOG strains produce a single well hung cola (think 1/2 to 1 ounce or more per plant).
Anyway 8- 2 gallon plants should do well in there, but 3 gallon plants may yield a bit more. Whatever fits. I was able to pull 8 ounces per plant out of 3.5 gallon buckets with some veg time.

A sog is subjective to a lot of plants filling up a full canopy.

Absolutely true, but you won't find many true "sog"s with 2-3 gallon pots. SOG's take small 8" or so clones and flower them. Hardly any veg time at all, just flower them to save time. But in theory, the plants need no veg time since there are a metric ton of them stuffed in the tent. Just sayin'

I get what you're saying tho. But yeah I'm trying to do 4 weeks veg max. I will start a mother plant as well and have a perpetual grow. Right now my 8 seedlings will veg under a 150 w HLG Led

That is one hell of an achievement!

Either size would do, In soil I would always try for the bigger size pot. I use 17 litre (4.49 US gallons) felt pots and allow for one plant per square foot.

It may take you a few attempts to dial in the veg time and plant training to maximise your flowering space. Where I live plant count matters so I stopped keeping mother plants years ago. When you are preparing your vegged plants for flower you can remove sucker branches that would not quite make it to the canopy and use them for your next batch.

I prefer to stagger my perpetual grows so I have one or two plants finishing per month. This makes trimming/drying/curing less of a daunting task each month and provides a constant top up to my stash. Once you get the rotation timing right and learn to adjust to new strains when introduced. It is a rewarding grow style.

Cheers,
Will

Get 1 gallon pots or like said above, 2 liter bottles. Each plants mass should stay in line with the pots perimeter. So no matter how tight you pack, every plant should get adequate light, and have breathing room etc. I did 18 plants in a 2x4 I could have had at least 30. Just clones I didn't wanna trash lol. But please consider packing 1 gallon pots or 2 liter bottles tight. Just make sure you have drip lines. I removed each plant each watering..... Never again

I have a 2.5 x 5 (2 x 320xl), and I have 6 plants in tall true 4 gallon pots, and its really packed in there, so I wouldn't recommend going bigger than (3) 3 gallon pots in a 2 x 4). I also have a few 2 x 4 tents with single 320XL in each and (3) 3 gallon pots in that space works really great. I can pull right around 16 to 18 zips out of each of those tents doing a single top at the 5th node if I play the up-pot game, (ie; start with a solo cup for 14 - 18 days, up-pot to a 1 gallon for 2 - 3 more weeks [stretching them out, laying them down], and then I only up-pot my plants to the final 3 gallon pot 2 weeks before I intend to flip them). That always gives them plenty of room to spread there wings all the way through flowering cause they have lots of room in the final pots to do that!

Yeah I'm deciding between 2 or 3 gal. Maybe since Im only doing 4 week veg I'll do 3 gal to play it safe. Guess I'd rather do more than less and not cut myself short possibly.
