Im pretty sure that polyplpoidy/triploid plants are sterile due to having their chromosomes in sets of 3 instead of pairs, that has something to with how they produce seedless fruit (bananas and watermelons etc.). Im not positive on that though. If you want you can always do a google search to learn more about polyploidy plants.
