I'm in the building trade but mostly residential, not an electrician & trying to help a brother out. He wants to run his 8 1000w lights that only work on 240 and he has a 208v 200a 3 phase panel. Is a buck boost transformer the way to go?

208 VAC usually comes from one floating side of a Delta 3 phase transformer. 240 VAC usually comes from a grounded center tapped transformer. Using an autotransformer would be very hazardous and violate code. Probably tripping the 208 VAC breakers.
The only way to do it correctly would be with a transformer with a 208 VAC floating primary and a 240 VAC grounded center tapped secondary.

That being said I think a buck boost transformer will work.

Well, the only part in your post I understood was the last sentence LOL but thank you for your response! He has an electrician coming to check it out next week. I hope he knows as much as you.
