BTW some UVA (3 - 5%) at 365nm will have the same effect and it´s safer for your eyes and body

Not saying it's true, but I've read papers suggesting that UVA is relatively unhelpful and that the plants clearly responded best to UVB.

One big reason I'm interested in these UVB LED lights is how specific their spectrum output is. Thus it would not take many watts at all to achieve a good dose of exactly the right spectrum.

I can understand how the idea got started that 3000K isn't "good" for veg,... but it's a totally wrong idea. 3000K full spectrum LED works fantastically for veg.

Higher K emitters have slightly better efficiency. 3500K provides a small boost over 3000K and provides a more ideal ratio over 3000K in the red/blue department but when it comes to growing the effect will be slight to unnoticeable.

Still, we have choices. No reason not to use 3500K unless the chamber is dedicated veg in which case 4000K will provide a slight efficiency boost.

It's been shown that stem and leaf characteristics are affected by red/blue ratio, but again the ranges we're working with, effect is slight.

Bottom line is that 3500K follows the Mcree curve most closely and provides "enough" blue, the only better choice would be higher CRI, but at the expense of photons it's not worth it.

@ttystikk Did you ever figure out how you were going to lay out your UV poker chips? I have been looking at these for the last few days just to play with.... I have been thinking one 30W Cree Epidled (notice the UV), two IR, and (6) 660nm on a APC-25-500. What do you guys think?

This was above my level of understanding, so I really didn't get much farther with it as yet.

was going to go with 3500k but was wondering what you guys like better (3000K or 3500K)

also was thinking of a hybrid system using a lesser wattage of 5000K to 'blue up' the 3000K, and then using that lesser wattage of 5000K to veg in same space

something like:
veg: 5000K @ 500 ppfd
flower: 5000K @ 250 ppfd + 3000K @ 750 ppfd

with the design being the 5000K run soft (efficient) in flowering and harder (for a limited time) in veg

thoughts? on this vs two completely separate systems of
veg:5000/5700/6500K @ 500 ppfd
bloom:3500/4000K @ 1000 ppfd

almost feel that im over thinking it and 'kinda red' and 'kinda blue' at the best efficiency/output/bin i can get will yield similar results

also consider DB bin availability of the 5000K and only CB of 3000K
25% DB 5000K + 75% CD 3500K would be 5-10% more lumens/watt than using the CB bins

check the date of the OP, almost two years ago.........................if your keen on messing with uv, I would add UVb ,t5 bulb, couple of hrs mid cycle to start off with and go from there; see how the plants respond.

Yep. The main thing is to harden the plants off to the UVB light. Start with 15 minutes a day, then increase by 15 minutes every day until you get to the desired duration.
