32 Gallon Garbage Can overkill?

I live in the south where we can get a lot of rain in the summer. So for my outdoor grow My original plan was to dig holes and then put a couple inches of smooth rocks to put in the bottom for drainage purposes and then a 10 gallon container in the hole in which I was going to put my own soil in(are natural soil is mainly clay) with my plants in it. Oh and of course I was going to have alot of holes drilled in the container. But now Im thinking more along the lines of 32 gallon plastic garbage cans with holes drilled in it. I know the bigger the area for the roots to grow the more yeild I can hope for per plants. And since my native soil is hard packed clay it would be more difficult for the roots to grow plus the fact of crappy fertilizer properties. So do you think something as big a garbage cans is alittle out of hand?

I think it's totally awesome and when I have my own land to grow on I plan on doing the exact same thing.

You can expect 8-10' plants with 2lbs of weed on them per plant if done correctly. Good luck.

I seen a lot of pictures of medical growers that use trash cans to grow in, it is a great idea you should get a few pounds per plant if they are good and tall. I hope they are sativa's for your sake because a 32 gallon plant will not really boost the growth a an indica though they will be much larger than if done inside.. Good luck

Thanks for the replies. The reason I was thinking a container was for drainage. If I just dig a big hole wont rain water go through the looser soil that I put in there and then collect at the bottom because of the clay. Im worried that t would just make a big quicksand like pit. I was gonna use the little stones at the bottom of the hole under the garbage can as a sort of buffer between my soil and the clay. Therefore there would be some room for the water to run through my soil(in can) and then drain out of the container into the stone area where it will have alittle time to drain into the clay. therefore not keeping my plants in a huge muddy puddle.

a general rule of thumb is for every foot your plant is tall you'll want at least a gallon of soil. so yeah, 32 gallons is kind of over kill. and you really dont need to plant in a garbage can. just dig a hole and throw your soil in that. a 3x3 foot hole is big enough to grow 10 foot monsters.

a 3 by 3 hole is about 20 gallons, that is plenty of soil for a big plant,i would dig the hole because the roots will go deeper,if allowed the tap root will go 10' or more into the ground,i would use 30+ gallons in a trash can.buy a bale of promix, that is roughly 50 gallons, you can do 2 plants in this,a bail is about 30 bucks.30 bucks plus 20 for nutes for 3-4 pounds of weed?thats a no brainer.the right strain helps too.(kc 33,super crystal, critical mass..etc.)

yeah so dont use a garbage can .. you can put gravel in the bottom of the hole and itll work the same man ... but pot doesnt tap root all too much but it grows roots like an upside down pine tree ... so horizontal growth throughout the top soil would be better than the side of a garbage can
