Your plants sex will display regardless. Why waste time it could be growing just to see its sex? I would skip the 36 hours of lights off. Sounds like you need to smack your friend!

what the hell? how is it a waste of time if ur only using 36 hours? and during that day and a half the lights are only off for like 1 and a half of their 12 hours their suppose to get... yeah and of course i know it will show regardless. but thats in 2 weeks instead of 2 days and thats like 12 days off of waiting. plus my plant is over the size i wanted it right now to.. i dont need the growth

ok so no one thinks if my plant is already taller than need for my setup and i need it to bud as fast as i can its not worth having that period cut to 2 days instead of a whole 2 weeks of growing? how bad could it stress them? obviously not enough if it actually works and speeds the process up. what could happen?

I did the 36 hours of darkness before going into the flowering light cycle(12/12). Didn't seem to hurt the plant. It showed it sex in 9 days after doing it. I did have alot of calyxs at almost all nodes before doing the dark period. I was almost certian it was a female. My only doubts were cause I didn't see any pistils yet before doing the dark period. I was hoping to see some after doing it, but didn't see any fort 9 days after doing it. If I had to do it again I would have just went 12/12. It did seem to cause the plant to strech a bit. I noticed alot of groth aftering the dark period.

If it's already taller than need for your setup then absolutely go for it. Sounds like exactly what you need, if it works. I get what people are saying about not losing time, but it doesn't sound like you need to worry about that. My only concern would be stressing it, but it could be that 36 hours of darkness is hardly anymore stressful than putting her into flowering. Plus if you're worrried about males, you'll get to them that much faster. Also, if you GAIN ten days of flowering by not having to wait through 12/12 you may come out on top in the end! Perhaps the plant thinks it's a solar eclipse! I'd be curious to hear from anyone who does both and what they've observed. Maybe 36 hours of darkness will catch on and become a sticky called 36 h.o.d?

Doesn't seem like you like the answer unless it is what you want. Never seen anything to support the 36 hour theory. It is also believed that if you do the same 36 hours before harvest. So what is the reason people feel this works? I just got through with growing white widow, 6 girls. Veg. 5 weeks including sprouting and then 12/12. In 5 to 7 days they had showed there sex. If you are experienced in sexing plants you can get a read by within a week. Lastly, why is knowing quicker going to help? If you want to flower it because it is too tall go ahead and flower it. One more last thing You can top in the beginning of flowering won't hurt a thing. Many people trim first going into flower to clear for sites to get more light.

From my experience, the plant is going to stretch regardless of the 36 hour dark period before flower. The stretch is just part of the flower cycle and all plants will stretch...some more than others depending on strain. I have some Affie that shows sex 2-4 days into flower everytime. I also have some sweet haze that takes 21+ days to show. The 36 hour period did not help anytime I have used it...thats just from my experience.

If your plant is already to tall and you have topped it, then maybe you should do a lil LST. The sweet Thai I grow, I top AND LST. It's the only way I can grow it and my flower room is 6 feet tall. Some plants you just gotta train'em to grow in your space. I don't think the 36 hours of darkness will help any at all in keeping your plant smaller. Good luck.
