I am of the opinion that the plants chose their sexual expression when they sprout and asses their surroundings...

Seedbearing plants needs good anchorage and an ample pocket of soil to extract nutrients from. So use deep pots for germing, the unhindered downward growth of the taproot will tell the seedling that there's good conditions for becoming a heavy female.

And cooler temperatures and blue light (MH-lamps), tells it that it is early spring and plenty of time to ripen seeds.

Reptiles and some fishes chose and changes their sexual expression based on environmental factors, and so does the plant IMO.

Try it out.
