Hey guys a question can i plug a 400w hps bulb into a regular bulb socket ??? Is a hood mandatory ???

ummmmm NO ... you can only use it in a mogul socket attached to a 400w ballast ... as for the hood .. depends on where and how you grow , but i wouldnt use one without a hood ( for reflective and cooling purposes)

no it will not fit into a normal light socket, you will need the proper socket! also they carnt be plugged directly into the wall, they need a ballast.

As everybody has explained, a 400W hps needs a Mogul socket and a special power supply called a 'ballast'. Expect to pay $100 - $150 for the ballast.
A hood and reflector are not mandatory but they increase the amount of light on your plant and help with cooling.

Don't take this the wrong way but your question shows complete ignorance about using HID lamps to grow. That's not a putdown. We all start from complete ignorance. But I am saying you need to invest some time finding out how HID lamps work and are used.
