400w hps...what's too small?

I am about to do a micro grow, and am in the process getting set up. I want to keep it small. Not quite PC case, but along the lines of a rubbermaid container. How small is too small for a 400w hps? Whats the min. size I could get away with assuming I kept the heat down?
 
400 watts are pretty cool running. What size area were you thinking about using? 400 watts can light like a 3x3 area really well. 4x4 if you push it. It can do less than that if you keep temps down..
 
yeah 3x3 or 4x4 is recommended for a 400w. if you did it in a rubbermaid container I would imagine it would be hard to fit the bulb and hood and all that in it. There not that big, but bigger than a rubbermaid container would fit. Unless of course your getting a gigantic container or something. I'm sure they probably make one.

I've got a triangle room in the corner of my garage. The sides are 870mm x 870mm x 1400 and its 1500mm high. will a 400w hps be to big for 2 plants in this area?? any help would be appreciated, cheers , Jakel
 
I'm sure a 400 would be fine in this area providing there is some kind of extraction. I have a 400 in a 800x800 by 1600mm high and it works fine with no heat issues
 
Thanks for the reply so quick. Basically i've got 2 fem widow seeds (the new strain from rhino seeds) that i'm germinating as i write.
I plan to start these under 2 fluorscents that give out around 2000 lumens. I can add another 2000 if that'll help??? I have read the more the better but be careful not to burn.
Plan on leaving them under the flo's on 18/6 for 2-3 weeks then put them under the 400w to finish the veg, then use it on 12/12 to flower??

Does this sound any good, for i am a newbie!! :)

haha, i didnt mean to high jack anything, just not great with a computer and didnt really look at starting my own thread. when they did I.T at school i was on the top field getting cained :D

any views on my 1st grow, about using flo's to start my seeds then finishing the veg off wiv my 400w, before switching to 12/12??
