Np dude, that's what I veg with and then I'm gonna throw a 1000w HPS to finish them off.

Yup have the cool tube too, love that thing. If I'm running the 400w MH I usually try to keep it roughly around 12-14 inches above the canopy.

Like astronaut say mh is better for veg, but IMO i prefer to do 18 inches away from tops. GL

FYI i read this today , you may already know about it , ( Cool-tubes are a great product which, for very small grow rooms or rooms running lots of lights, can be the only option for running high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting. However, they do have their downsides. Compared to an 'open' reflector, the curved glass in a cool-tube reduces the amount of available light that reaches the plant. Also, glass will block out the UV light that reaches the plant and it is UV that causes Cannabis to create and release her lovely essential oils. )

Is there any particular reason why? My light height is mostly an arbitrary number (I looked at a chart one time and for some reason 12 inches stuck with me), just wondering if there something I could be doing better...

Yea I've heard that too, that's why it's important to keep them clean so you can negate that problem a little bit (or so I've heard, seems logical enough).

Not, not really is just personal preference, i just i fell like thats the optimal light distance, at least for me, but since u have cool tube that might b better for u, i run ma 600wt without cool tube that's why i keep it at 18 inch. toke on =====~~

Just bought a 600 w they say 600 is the best bang for your buck. But let me know how it turns out 400 a lot of light also

600 in a 3x3/3x4 will work for you. Mh or hps will both work fine for veg. If you have heavy or straight sativa's you might want to veg with mh. If you need some stretch for a certain method, hps will do that for you in veg.
i'd go with the 600 any day. you can always use a conversion bulb with plenty of blue light.

I run my 400 HPS (open bulb) 13" to 15" above the canopy and veg with a 400 MH (open bulb) about 12" to 13" above the canopy... try to get it close as you can without heat stress or light intensity stress .
