4x4 LED Bloom / T5 Veg - (Querkle x Trainwreck) + Pink Lady + Mendocino County Diesel

Howdy y'all! Figured I'd start to document my experiments, successes and failures with my new grow setup in my first house in Colorado. Ride that freedom train! So far I'm running a wire-rack veg station with a 4ft' T5 on one shelf and a clone station on another shelf into a 4x4 heavy duty mylar bloom tent.

My bloom light is a G8LED 240w Bloom panel, I've been sectioning off a corner of my 4x4 for just one female in mid-flowering stages.

I decided to prune late, and on the fly decided to clone the unwanted lower shoots! 5 total, one died overnight and one looks great.

Here's the latest progress of the (TGA Querkle x Homegrown Trainwreck) I've been calling QT or Qutie. Sweet citrus terpene profile from what I can tell.

That's bloom week 5. Here's a preview of what I'm getting ready to put in the tent once I install some more wattage!

Chocolope: heavy LST next time will consider scrog. This is a store-bought clone from a Denver dispensary.

Mendocino County Diesel: Another store-bought clone, it didn't take right away and I almost tossed it until it finally started to grab on and grow. It's sort of far behind and didn't show much response until after a large transplantation.

Pink Lady: TGA Subcool (Black Cherry Soda x Space Queen) from a seed. Heavy indica. Used light LST to even canopy after a simple initial topping.

I'm just puttin it out there and any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Nice looking start, Alan. Stumbled across your thread today after becoming a member. I am interested in your results with the T5 setup as I have tossed around the idea of using them myself in the near- future. Also a Colorado resident up in Castle Rock. Good luck with your grow! Keep us posted.

Looking nice man. REMEBER THE HARE DIDNT WIN THE RACE.
YOU SEEM PRETTY KNOWLEDGABLE IN WHAT UR DOING. TAKE UR TIME LST WITH A LONG VEG.

MY ADVICE WOULD BE TO INVEST IN AT LEAST A 250W HPS A LONG WITH THAT LED.

KEEP IT UP!

  • It just so happens my friend essentially gave me a 6" 440cfm inline and a magnetic 400w HPS over the weekend, so I've been spending the last few days with vent configuration and heat control. Photoperiod interruption due to intake is my first challenge, thinking of investing in a 6" dust shroom. Have the 400 and the LED running parallel to each other at the moment, the ladies have only been adjusting for one day now though.

    More pics soon!

Hey everyone whats up! I am so thankful for those who took the time to read and comment on this I sincerely appreciate it! Going to keep up the momentum and have got a journal update and some added info!

First, off...my friend basically gave me a 400w HPS and 445cfm inline fan, Here's the "plant's-eye view" with the new HPS installed!

Top view.

Canopy of Qutie, Pink Lady, and Chocolope under the 400w HPS.

HPS+LED. Heavily noticeable color change inside the tent vs. HPS or LED only (moreso than you can tell in these pictures). HPS does not drown out the LED as much as I thought it might.

New electronics: Organic Garden Supply Air Strike 6" inline duct fan, fan controller, and Apollo 14 1800w strip with built-in timer to consolidate my cords.

Mendecino County Diesel: It continues to pick up momentum under the T5. Doing slight training, but I can tell it's stubborn. Going to just let it grow out with two main colas relatively undisturbed.

Pink Lady: had quite a heartbreaker today. I was arranging the fans and trying to micromanage every little thing down to the millimeter in the tent, and knocked her off the pedestal. The two upper branches cracked where they meet at the main stem, but not completely...I sort of propped up the branches so that there wasn't a "gaping wound" so to speak, and I have no idea whether that's biologically beneficial. Learning to not "handle" them too much.

Here's a glimpse of my nutrient setup. I've got a GH pH kit as well as standard SuperThrive.

Clones: These 4 champions are still alive! I can't believe it because I only decided to clone them after trimming them off of a plant starting in flower (they were less than ideal specimens and that's putting it nicely). I actually had the shoots in my hand, and didn't have the heart to toss them, so I put them in a cup with tap water like damn roses and sped to the hydro shop to get the clone setup. Pulled each of the 5 shoots out of the cup, razor bladed them, Clonex, and they are doing alright in the cubes with the help of the SuperSprouter dome.

Well that sums up the updates. My main concern currently, besides my wounded female, is the pH of my nutrient solution in regard to the survivability of Mykos microbes. I've been doing a lot of reading on roll it up as well as other places and keep coming back conflicted. I was wondering if inorganic things like SuperThrive and a bit of pH down will have a noticeable negative affect on the microbes (killing them) therefore negating the benefit of any expensive organic nutrients due to the fact dead microbes can't break them down. Any thoughts? Also do you guys think the Pink Lady will live? That's a pretty clear pic of the breakage.

Cheers!

A little tape on the break, maybe?

Nice, man!! Glad you're putting that light to good use since I can't at the moment. Also, that Querkle x Trainwrecks that I bred is gonna be fire. Keep up the good work.

Howdy everyone, lot's happened in the past few weeks figured it was time for another installment of my now-hybrid LED/HPS grow.

First off, let's look at that Pink Lady that I dropped like a total klutz. The base of the main two branches snapped halfway and I thought it might have been a fatal blow! However...

IMG_2542.jpgIMG_2543.jpg

She looks glorious! Healthiest looking in the bunch currently. Currently in Bloom 3.

Now how about our old friend Qutie? I had some problems with hermaphrodization, and just plucked out all the male parts meticulously. No new ones have shown up in weeks and the fan leaves are starting to fade as she reaches the end of her journey.

IMG_2550.jpgIMG_2545.jpgIMG_2544.jpg

Not a phenomenal looking yield, but the smell is divine, can't wait to see it cured.

Next up, the jungle beast Chocolope. I say that because this thing is a straight vine taking over my tent! I actually tediously maneuvered a screen support system and weaved some tangled shoots through the screen so they were getting light more efficiently and standing up. Think for a "late scrog" it is really helping manage space and light reception. Same timeframe as the Pink Lady, currently Bloom 3.

IMG_2540.jpgIMG_2533.jpgIMG_2531.jpg

Last one I have in the bloom tent now is this sad sack, Mendocino County Diesel. This thing has been nothing but trouble since it was a clone (transplanted at the same time and under the same conditions as the vigorous Chocolope). I have been trying to restore soil pH balance to prevent what I believe is a phosphorus deficiency not due to available phosphorus, but due to pH affecting the roots' ability to uptake that phosphorus which becomes very finnicky outside it's optimum pH--anything below 6.0 and its ability to be absorbed drops off dramatically. Over the past five days or so, it has shown deeper green hues and other signs of improvement, aside from the sheer wattage boost.

IMG_2535.jpgIMG_2534.jpg

In an even more unfortunate condition are my pathetic clones...

IMG_2566.jpgIMG_2564.jpgIMG_2563.jpgIMG_2562.jpgIMG_2561.jpg

I have a theory as to why they didn't root after inspecting the dissected cubes: the roots started forming out of not the cut bottom portion, rather up a little bit. I think I didn't make the holes big enough in the cubes and the rooting hormone was essentially wiped off the tips and upward. I think I will try those circular rockwool units that pinch closed from the sides next time, because I worry about enlarging the hole on the cubes causing too much tension on tiny root hairs if the stem moves, as well as light exposure. I used a pH 6.0 solution soak and it was only distilled water + SuperThrive (a hydro store suggestion). I kept them moist but they just didn't take. Any other opinions why they didn't work would be appreciated but hey practice makes perfect, I'll get it eventually!

Now I couldn't end on a down note, and as these clones didn't take I just had to make some moves. The whole bloom tent would be done before anything new was ready to go in if I didn't step on it, so I headed on down to another Denver dispensary, Karmaceuticals, and picked up four brand new clones off of some healthy mother plants which I was lucky enough to see. I transplanted them gently into 1 liter plastic cubes with Roots Organics original potting soil. They haven't grown much in a week, but I think they are working on some root action! The look healthy otherwise for freshly transplanted clones.

IMG_2556.jpgIMG_2555.jpgIMG_2554.jpgIMG_2553.jpg

Next four up in rotation on the bloom tent: Headband, Blueberry, Cinderella 99, and of course, San Fernando Valley OG Kush. I am particularly in love with Headband, and am also excited to be testing out a grow on the legendary SFV. Blueberry is a classic and Cindy is actually on my most wanted list but have never tried it. I guess my first time will be my own grow! So far, the Headband is looking like the leader of the pack.

Anyways, if you're reading this, thanks for tuning in! I'd love some feedback of any kind. Cheers everyone!

It's time to finish this thread, as this is no longer solely and LED grow. I'm going to start a new grow journal now that the whole operation is rolling. I thought I'd sign off with a harvest pic though, 131.5g picked weight and it definitely was in need of water when cut. I'm estimating/hoping for around 38g dry. Not too bad for a little lady that spent 2 months in window light, 1 month in 240w LED only, and nearly 1 month with the added 400w (the HPS ballast we had broke last week when attempting to ignite, old 400w magnetic...upgraded to 600w digital--Solis-Tek with a Hortilux EYE Super HPS!). The Qutie may not have got to enjoy the 600, however she sure did break the ice for a great perpetual setup.
