4x4 Veg tent lighting question

im going to get a 4x4 tent for just vegging plants about 6 weeks. hopefully i can fit about 9 clones in there for 6-7 weeks with some topping and such. Would a 400 watt light be able to handle that veg? or possibly a nice T5 system like 8 bulbs or something? I have plenty of space in the flower room but im adding this veg tent so I can get more of a perpetual harvest going. I have a cloning cab that the clones stay in the first 2-3 weeks before they get moved to this tent.

no a 400 watt HID with a cool tube or would a t5 system be enough maybe 30k lumens. i wouldnt have to worry as much about heat if i was able to go with the t5s but il figure it out if t5s will not be enough for 6 weeks of vegging.

Personally if you dont mind the cost of running the mh during veg then ue that in the 4x4 tent. Yes a 400 will be able to veg some nice bushes in a 4x4 tent.

I would use the t5 setup only if heat or cost was a problem. Ive used both and prefer the hids during veg.

Id go with enough t5s that you totally have the thing covered. Maybe a 12 bulb or two sixes. A 600 watt hid would cover that area better than a 400 but in both hid scenarios youd probably have to have an inline cooling system. Personally id go with the floros just because they run cooler and have less chance of burning your house down. The only problem that i have with floros is that if your plant is not directly under the light, it doesnt grow. Soo if you want to fill the bottom of your tent with containers you have to completly cover the top of your tent with lights, where as a single 600 watt bulb would cover the whole tents floor. Either would work but youd save the money on ducting and an inline fan with floros, id be quieter, and safer. MPO :):):)

i already have a 420 CFM fan hooked to my scrubber and 1k watt system in my flower room, i was thinking i could connect both lights to the inline fan and put a small exhaust fan on the tent. room is air conditioned also temps are very easily controlled at the moment. then i would just add some small exhaust fan to the tent to get air circulation through a passive duct in the bottom i would think? would this work?

thinking of going with

and this is the tent

I run a 400 mh in a 3x3 and veg 15 plants in 1 gal pots 6" exhaust and passive intake with a oscillating fan

I would try for a 600w in that tent. I dont think you should have much problem with that many clones. Ive currently got 13 in my 4'9"x4'9" but its a little on the crowded side. Good luck with the setup

Im running a 1000 in my 4x4
an air cooled hood and an inline fan
are a must though.

I think the 600 or up would be better for you with some cooling.

A 400 is supposedly good for 2.3 - 3ft
600 for 3.5 - 4ft
1000 for 4-5ft

You don't need a cool tube. I run an XXXL Reflector with either a 600 or 1000 watt HPS (or MH), and I had that in my tent and it wasn't to hot. But my reflector is glass sealed and I ran the air through it. So I hung my charcoal canister and my light in the tent. I then opened both passive intakes (Secret Jardin 4x4) and put my Max Can Fan on the outside venting into the room for the brief time I had to move out of my actual flower room, about a week. So long enough.

But it worked perfectly and temps didn't get above 90 at the canopy. Which is fine by me. So putting in a 400 would work easily. But I run large fans and 8" ducting so you need good flow.

I usually use a 4' 12 lamp HO T5 for vegging in my 4x4 it covers everything well and they grow GREAT :) and I don't have to really zoom the air through to keep it cool.

I remember back in the day when a 400 fit in a 4x4 a 600 fit in a 5x5 and 1000 in 6x6 granted that is only if you use your ligh properly. you would put a 400 in a 4x4 but keep your plants in a 3x3 area so the light can fall past the plants hit the walls and reflect back to the lower parts of the plants of course back then you didn't need anything but an exhaust fan too, no cool tube nothing like that. every year it seems people put bigger lights in small places then complain that it's too hot .seems a waste of light to me.

Lol, I cant really comment cause I don't know.
Everyone is always looking for more though, more money - more problems
I guess.

I use 600 watt lights in my 4x4 tents no cool tubes needed. I use 2 or 3 clip fans in and one exahust fan to a oder scrubber. but a 400 watter would be ok not great but doable with little heat. Mine stay around 76 closed up

I have brought plants from seedling through bloom very effectively using a VHO t5 8 lamp fixture. It costs about $50 more than a HO t5, which also will do what you want to do. It is 2x4 and with throw will illuminate you tent perfectly. Very shallow fixture which can be lowered to wihin inches of the plants with no burn. Very high lumen output with low heat, and I just finished 8 - 4' tall plants and they came out great. Both fixtures are on Amazon. Peace

yeah its not like im flowering in the tent just vegging. i move the plants under a 1000w light after their vacation in the veg tent. i think im going with a 400 watt air cooled hood and il just hook up my hood to my inline fan i already have that is already hooked to a carbon filter. im going to get just like a booster fan and use that as an exhaust for the tent with passive intake i think. and im getting the tent with multiple vent flaps thats like 20-30 bucks more and the side windows. hopefully this will work out well gonna have to drop like 500 bucks on this new addition it seems but hopefully will pay for itself in no time.

thanks for the help and suggestions.

Sounds good man, if you have the ventilation system already youll get more boom out of a hid. Aaaaand if you ever decide to say screw veg and just do two flower rooms.....you could ;) edit - id really go with 600 though, dont sell yourself short on light. Its only a couple more bucks :):):)

yeah i just checked i can get a 600w cool tube for about the price of a 400 watt with a hood. good idea

most important thing is ventilation. especially with summer coming up heat is one of the biggest battles for me. thats why i perfer sealed hoods. I heard the xxxl hoods stay cooler and you can keep closer to the plants. I find that hard to believe as the xxxl hoods are a lot greater mass to heat up. Im going to run the xxxl hood with a 400 bulb/ballast then switch it over to 6 when flowering comes along.

Larger hoods keep cooler as it acts as a heat sink just like in a computer. The heat goes to the metal then radiates outward cooling off as the heat gets further from the source.

well i have a 6500 btu air conditioner dedicated to the room and i run lights at the night hours. had a few 90 degree days so far and it stayed about 74 and the ac wasnt running most of the time. in the winter i actually just remove the glass from the 1k watt and it heats the room when lights are on no problem too lol. when it was in the 20s it could keep it about 70 in there.
