Nope that will not work....when people refer to fans for cooling a HID light that size they are typically talking about an "inline" fan I use a 4" 180 CFM (vortex) fan when I had my 400 HPS in a 2x4x8 closet. That fan you linked from home depot is a booster fan and they do not move enough air. Some will use those to help intake and have seen them used for outtake but for smaller setups. The fan you need is not sold at home depot or lowes. Good luck!

Basically this. I thought he was referring to an inline fan not a duct fan.

Yes that 6 inch duct fan will work . I have used these cheapies in the past , it worked for me and I have used the 8 inch to cool 2 1000k bulbs. they only last 6 months you will want to replace it or it will stop working !http://www.homedepot.com/p/Suncourt-Inductor-6-in-In-Line-Duct-Fan-DB206/100067594 cheap junk ! but yes it does cool the room and may make a wining sound as well. suggest stay away. if possible . guys if you want a fan that will cool four 1000 watt 8 inch cool tubes check this fan out modification will be needed this fucker works ! I have 12 of these total running 12 hours for the last 2 years . http://www.harborfreight.com/8-inch-portable-ventilator-97762.html

so this 6" home depot inline fan would move air from a 400 watt hps air cooled hood to a duct into my ceiling?

I use this same thing except it's to cool a 400W MH in a 3x3x6ft tent. My temps are 69-75F in the tent... nearly perfect :-). Ambient room temp = 62-65. So I'm not gonna say it won't work.
