If i were to make a flood and drain system and used a started cube and then put it in the big 6 inch slab can i fully grow my plants within that slab or would roots be coming out of it? i notice sum people put them flat on a surface not worrying about roots that might pop out from the bottom. Please help

i used to keep a thin layer of hydroton(clay pellets) in the bottom of my tray for the roots that come out the bottom. now i use 4" cubes in ice cream pails filled with hydroton. the hydroton is reusable as the RW is not so you can save some $$ too.

so how tall would my plants be before the roots pop out from the bottom of the 6 inch?

I use the 4in cubes and have had a little trouble just letting it sit in my ebb flow. What I do now seem to work much better and I have begun to recommend to others. I now use just the cubes until the roots come out of the bottom. This is about the 3rd to 4th week. Then I put the cubes in net baskets with clay pellets. This gets the roots off of the reservoir and lets them get more air and spread out. If you have any questions I can post a photo for you. If you are going to just let them sit then you will need to flush them more and watch for root rot.

sometimes i get them poking out the bottom of a 4" block around week 2 of veg. any particular reason your going with the slabs instead of blocks?

I find that the 4in fit better in my small ebb flow. The only time I have had any trouble is in some of my first grows when I let the plants get to big and the 4in could not hold them up. The baskets fix this problem also. I am not sure if this is what you mean with your question.

I meant that in those 4 inch cubes you can have full grown plants and the roots all inside the cube? With none hanging out?
