As far as the smell goes, it could be genetic. Aroma from cannabis plants is just an expression of terpene presence so it's unlikely that you're experiencing some kind of technical issue with your set up, and more likely that your specific plant doesn't have a very strong nose. I've had some plants with wicked strong scents, and some with nothing, wait till you cure and store before you worry too much about the nose though.
 
I have found a good 18-6 or 20-4 on-off cycle is good to allow the plant to build up carbs during veg that will be used for terps
in a 24/0 veg cycle those plants seemed less stinky and grew at the same rate for me

genetics are also a big role, if you're doing everything else right
