600 watts vs 1000 watts hps

I usually use 1000 watt hps lamps in a 4x5 area and do pretty well but my buddy told me 600 hps watts is all I need and I can get the same yield because u can keep the light closer to plants. True or False

i like an open hood during winter, but if you worried about the heat or getting that little bit closer with the light, can't you just get a cool tube and keep the 1000w in the 4 x5.

I don't know about a 4x5 but I use a 630w cmh in a 4x4 .. Works fine
