Can't comment on quality, you may be right. Let East Coast do his grow his way and see the result. From my limited experience I feel that the most important factor is filling the canopy: making the most of your light. You can do this two ways
1. Veging a few larger plants out to fill the space
2. Having lots of small plants that take up the same area
Say you're aiming for .7g per watt which is doable - 600w light, 420g or 15oz. To get that you could do 3 plants, veg for 6 weeks and flower for 10 and get 5oz a piece. So you've done 0.043 grams per watt per week.
OR you could do 20 plants 12/12 from seed over 11-12 weeks to get the same amount = 0.064 grams per watt per week. So you have the same weight of bud but its taken you 5 weeks less to get. There is also nothing stopping you doing this perpetually too, no need for a veg room and you've had to run your lights for 5 weeks less. Major downside I have found is the trim always takes longer on smaller plants.
