600watt overkill?

hey had a question is a 600 watt hps light to much for my space. the measurements are 4'wide x 2'deep x 6'tall its a cooltube system with 6¨ inline fan to cool it. Plan on getting a 4¨blower fan with carbon filter for extraction and another in line for the intake. Any feed back would b greatly appreciated

Your intake can be passive no need to spend money..also I believe you can hook up your filter to your light and use one fan, only reason to use two is if you use co2 also by omitting one fan you can instead put a circulation fan aiming just above the tops...just what I would do personally..

seems like a waste of good light to me. 2 400s would be more efficient especially withonly 6 ft hight

light will take up 1 foot, plant pots will take up 1 foot, you want to keep your light 1 foot away so you can only grow a 36" plant anyway 2 400s will serve

passive intake will be fine no need for the extra fan

As long as you have good air flow and obviously enough space to put the light in you should be good and sorry if I misunderstood your question.

thanks fist grow with this light grew with cfl's b4 just thougt i needed an upgrade and got the 600 and thought it would b overkill. Once i get my intake and exhaust setup i'll give it a go thanks again

4' x 2' = 8 sq ft (floor space)
each square foot needs about 50w
600/8 = 75w/sq ft
75watts per square foot is quite high.

Also....
The INVERSE SQUARE RULE.
"At twice the distance from the source [of light],
the area covered will be FOUR TIMES GREATER...
but the intensity [of the light] will be FOUR TIMES LESS".

(Imagine you have 5g of peanut butter and 50cm2 of WonderBread on which to spread it
- that's 0.1g peanut butter to every 1cm2.
If the 5g of PNB had to be evenly spread on 200cm2....
It would be 0.025g PNB to each 1cm2.
Learn the INVERSE SQUARE RULE.
It's a way to calculate how much intensity of light is lost
with every inch that the lamp is moved away from the plants.

The word SQUARE is the one you need to think on.....
It's not the INVERSE RECTANGLE RULE.
A 3' X 3' floor space would be a better shape to give equal light to every part.

4 x 2 will ensure that the central 2 x 2' is highly concentrated lumens
the 1 x 2' at each side will be less concentrated
(the closer the centre, the higher the concentration of light).

To try and diminish the problems, that this uneven distribution of light could cause,
I would put the taller plants on the outer edge, the shorter plants more central.
UNLESS a plant is shorter due to a problem
(growth development slowed due to nute burn, deficiencies, light burn, heat/cold.....)
In which case I would NOT attempt to force grow through intensified light.

It will work as long as you have decent ambient temps in the room or exhaust out. I run a 600w in a cool tube in about the same size tent - but I only run at 300w for veg, 450w for transition, and only go 600w during full flowering. I used to just train the plants but have switched over to using a screen (SCROG). 6' height is workable as long as you aren't planning on growing trees.

I am running that exact same setup right now on 5 autos with no problems at all. My temps stay between 74 and 77 and humidity stays around 41 to 45%.

You always want to use Lumens to calculate how much light your grow room is getting per sqr foot.
The reason, HPS and MH can be the same wattage, but there Lumens out put are different.

600 watt HPS 90,000 lumens
8 sqr. feet
11,250 Lumens sqr. Ft.
7000 Lumens is very robust growth. You have around 4000 extra Lumens. a Little Over Kill.

When you say In-line fan that scares me.
You want a in-line blower. The more CFM's the better -IMO- 6"
In the summer time. Your lights are gonna get HOT you want alot of air to pass over the light to cool it.
As mentioned, don't use duct work on one end of the cool tube. Leave it open in the tent.
When your blower turns on it will also suck the warm air from the tent. You don't need another exhaust.

You have a Cool Tube so you won't have to worry to much about Light/Plant distance.

You have a light already and it will work great for you but come on guys square feet and lumens per square feet work great for squares. What's the footprint of you're light? SQUARE. Or a little rectangular but you wouldn't put a 1000w light in a 1 ft x 25 ft room would you because that's what your doing. 600w light covers a 4x4 square nicely 3x3 if you were born after 1980,so you are losing 8 square ft of usable light with a 600 in a 2x4 room that could equate to 8 more plants of you are packing the room . Plants which could mean a half pound depending on style. My plants take up 32x32 space each at 5 oz per plant they could squeeze 2x2 so for me it would be a waste of around 10 oz to run that light in that space. Efficiency is a part of growing too. Produce as much as you can with the tools you have somehow over the years that got watered down pond lights keep getting put in smaller and smaller spaces and there is your .93 grams per watt you can't fit enough plant in there to get your gram per watt, please, prove me wrong I want o see it

Thanks for all the great info guys. Every one seems to b very helpful around here. I'm not gonna run the hps for veg just flowering got a t5 setup for veg and seedlings

I wouldn't worry about squares, rectangles, peanut butter, watts per square lumens, grams per litre or any other kind of confusing stuff!! A 600w light would be plenty for that space, you could have used a 400w but if you have the 600w already then don't worry as I've never heard anyone say 'I had too much light on that grow'!!!

1000w Hortilux HPS in a 4 x 4 area is 62w sq/ft, and 145,000 Lumens x 1600 umol
This light is specifically made for a 4 x 4 area. Consider it is 62w sq/ft.

A 600 is actually made for a 3 x 3 and delivers 66.6w sq ft and 90,000 lumens.

OP really isnt giving to much overkill at 9 more lumens per sq/ft. Main thing is to have good airflow.
