I have a room that is 8ft x10 ft that I am going to use for flowering. I am painting the ceiling and walls hi gloss white. For now I am just going to be flowering 12 plants. These are the questions I have. How many 1000watt lights do you think I will need and since I am patinting everything high gloss white should I just hang the lights vertical with no hood or should I use a hood of some kind with them? I Have very high ceilings in this room about 10ft tall. I was going to vedg the plants to about 2 to 3 ft. I am new at this and only have grown outdoors once. I thank you in advance for any help.

NO!!!! NOT GLOSS WHITE!!!! FLAT WHITE ONLY!!! Seems wrong, but the gloss actually blocks more light (by far) than flat white. Vegging some strains to 3' means 9' total height. As far as venting, you want to clear the entire room in 5 minutes. You have 8000 cubic feet so you need at least a 1600 cfm fan, just to exhaust the room. As many lights as you can afford. Design your room, then decide what you should do about lighting, hoods and numbers. If you are going hydro, most systems wont work with a vertical light set up, with soil and containers you can do as you like, but cooling a vertical light is a challange. 1 1000 watt does an area of 4x4 to 5x5 well enough for good production. That should help you get a start

Nice area to work with for a small grow. That ten foot ceiling would be great for some tall sativa types. I have real similar dimensions to work with without the high ceiling. I break the room into thirds. One third is for blooming and runs the length of the room. I have 14 in there as we speak with room for a few more. Middle third is directly in front of the door and is the walk way. Final third is cut into thirds also. One third is the cloning and vegging area. The rest of the space is taken up with a cheap shelf and a small refrigerator. Small AC on the end directly opposite the door where it can be split off to keep both areas cool. CFLs for cloning and vegging. HPS 400 and a bunch of curly tail CFL's for bloom. I aint that picky on the paint. Always heard flat was best but think any white is preferable to brown for example. Object as I see it is to keep the surfaces as cool as possible. Now how much light bounces around off of it I aint got a clue. I left my slide rule in my other pair of over hauls. Happy growing to you sir. Its a very addictive hobby:)

I split this room up already. I have 5x8 area for vedging and a 5x5 closet for mothers. In the vedg area I have racks so I can double stack the plants. And then I have just the 8x10 area for flowering. Ok so flat white. I am totaly shocked about the flat white! Ok thanks for the information. So what about hoods for the lights, use them or not? If yes get the biggest one I can? Thank you for your help already.

I would say do your research as to how much area you want each light to cover, i wouldn't push it too far stay close to the 4x4 to 5x5 per light. Reflectors are very much a personal and expensive choice. I personally like the hydrofarm radiant hood. But like i said, maybe vertical will work better for you, much cheaper but has downfalls. All i can really say is sit down and plan your layout carefully, and plan your lights on that, circles work better in some places and will not work at all in others. Remember moving (yourself) around the plants is needed daily, so too close to walls and each other can mean inability to access areas/plants. No one can tell you the best set up for you, but there is lots of good books out there for ideas, including shelves, movable walls, etc. Just remember design is one of the most important and overlooked steps.

8 by 10 can evaporate very quickly. if the room doesnt have AC already, your going to want to figure in about 7-10,0000BTU's per light. so the more lights, the bigger the AC unit. that takes up place. And then you need humidity control, and if your using co2, you enter into an all new ball game. Filters take up space, and if you run aircooled lights, you have hoods and ducting that all take up space.

your size of plants are HUGE bud. your going to loose height for sure if you go that big before flowering. so hoods with only get in the way. but keeping good air movement without burning the plants is going to be a big concern as well. I run a similar set up. my room is a 9 by 7 by10. I run three 1000w lights in air cooled XXL Mag Hoods. they are huge, and keep very cool. i run co2, I have a 30,0000btu AC and a dehumidifier. there is a heater in their as well for when the lights go out it does not get to cold. I veg plants for 2 weeks until 8-12" in height and then flower. I put 15 under each light and each group of 15 is in its own flower schedule. I swap 15 out every three weeks. that way my veg room and cloner are always producing. and i flower on a 9 week cycle. my end result are nice 3' plants with 2-3 ounces a plant. and they are all still nicely spread out that air circulation and co2 distribution is timely and efficient. if you pack a bunch of giant plants in their, you start running into PM and mold issues. and that ALWAYS sucks.

good luck bro, and growing with this much space always makes it more fun. i just cant wait to expand. bigger right now to me sounds crazy, but sounds like a ton of fun.

I have a 8x10 room with (3) 1000 watt HOODED lights. You have to take into count clearing the room and providing it with fresh air and cooling at same time. I will just lay out my set up and you take it from there okay buddy. 8x10 room, 3000 watts "L" shape layout with capability to run 4000 on "U" light layout. I use a 737cfm 8 " Can Fan with an 8" to 6" reducer for exhaust and cooling lights GET A SPEEDSTER so you can balance the room pressure...I have a 737cfm 8 inch Can Fan for inline air and a mushroom for filtration and to keep bugs out.Take note the size generally for diameter is better for larger inline than exhaust but I need serious reliable cooling. Get a speedster for that fan too. YOU ARE ALWAYS BETTER GETTING MORE FAN POWER THAN TRYING TO PUSHING IT WITH LESS. "SPEEDSTER IS A GOD SEND! you can dial in the pressure perfect with watching you plastic door flutter in and out showing the room pressure. I have a room built into corner of existing room ( utilized the existing 4 side and built an "L" shaped wall and pushed into corner to make a grow room. Sealed it with caulking and plastic on floor. FLAT WHITE!!! glossy will defuse light in an adverse manner.Invested in a Powerbox" brand light time box and am running 240 volts to reduce AMP usage and use more lights I put 36 clones under (1) 1000 watt MH in bags for about 2 weeks or your desired height..strains have different characteristics. turn on all 3 1000 watters HPS and spread the plants out ( after transplanted to 3 gallon pots. Lots more to know when doing feeding but I gotta split and burn one. Its about wattage that tells you your yield Take into count strain. But a good grower will get .50 gms per watt...or lb per 1000watt number of plants doesn't dictate it. Root space, lights, food, air.
