Some of the lower wonders of the world have already been destroyed now a call come to destroy some of the most incredible structures that have endure time. When will we get it they don't think like us.

By AL ARABIYA

An Egyptian jihad leader, with self-professed links to the Taliban, called for the “destruction of the Sphinx and the Giza Pyramids in Egypt,” drawing ties between the Egyptian relics and Buddha statues, local media reported this week.

Murgan Salem al-Gohary, an Islamist leader twice-sentenced under former President Hosni Mubarak for advocating violence, called on Muslims to remove such “idols.”

“All Muslims are charged with applying the teachings of Islam to remove such idols, as we did in Afghanistan when we destroyed the Buddha statues,” he said on Saturday during a television interview on an Egyptian private channel, widely watched by Egyptian and Arab audiences.

“God ordered Prophet Mohammed to destroy idols,” he added. “When I was with the Taliban we destroyed the statue of Buddha, something the government failed to do.”

His comments came a day after thousands of ultraconservative Islamists gathered in Tahrir Square to call for the strict application of Sharia law in the new constitution.

But in retaliation to Gohary’s remarks, the vice president of Tunisia’s Ennahda party, Sheikh Abdel Fattah Moro, called the live program and told Gohary that famous historic military commander Amr ibn al-Aas did not destroy statues when he conquered Egypt.

“So who are you to do it?” he wondered. “The Prophet destroyed the idols because people worshiped them, but the Sphinx and the Pyramids are not worshiped.”

Gohary, 50, is well-known in Egypt for his advocacy of violence, Egypt Independent reported.

“He was sentenced twice, one of the two sentences being life imprisonment. He subsequently fled Egypt to Afghanistan, where he was badly injured in the American invasion. In 2007, he traveled from Pakistan to Syria, which then handed him over to Egypt. After Mubarak's fall in early 2011, he was released from prison by a judicial ruling,” the newspaper added.

In recent months, fears have surfaced that the ultra-conservative Salafi political powers may soon wish to debate new guidelines over Egyptian antiquities.

Islamists have swept the recent presidential and parliamentary elections in the country’s post-revolutionary stage, with the Muslim Brotherhood and the ultra-conservative Salafi Islamists rising to political power.

“The fundamental Salafis have demanded to cover Pharaonic statues, because they regard them to be idols,” Egyptian author on ancient history Ahmed Osman told Al Arabiya English, explaining that Salafi Muslims follow conservative religious principles which view statues and sculptures as prohibited in Islam.

“But so far the government has done nothing to indicate what is the future of Egyptian antiquities,” adds Osman.

Many hope that Egypt’s new President Mohammed Mursi will help usher better preservation of Egypt’s proud cultural heritage. Egyptian officials have recently announced the country will reveal more of its ancient buried treasures.

The tomb of Queen Meresankh III, the granddaughter of Khufu, of Great Pyramid fame, is set to be opened to tourists later this year, with the last resting places of five high priests also slated to be put on show.

Officials are also believed to be reopening the underground Serapeum temple at Sakkara, to the south of Cairo.

As much as I'd like to see the pyramids I don't think I'll be planning a trip in that direction anytime soon.

The way I'd want to deal with the islamists would probably destroy the pyramids anyway.

I concur. What is strange is they are destroying the very things their ancestors gave their lives to make, they are destroying their heritage.

The sad thing is the Islamist are destroying some of the most precious artifacts on earth unfettered.
As a Christian... Christians.. did the exact same thing... (Mayan writings were decimated) etc...

Seems no matter the religion.. idiots abound..

There have been several calls recently in Egypt for about 2-3 years for unrest and to destroy the ancients

But the Islamics themselves recognize the Salafis as extreme. It would be like pointing a finger at David Koresh or Jim Bakker and saying "Behold Christians!" 99.99+% of Christians would recognize at once how ridiculous that would be.

The lower half of the article shows how unimpressed Egypt's government is with the Salafis. cn

That sounds so comforting. Not.

They destroyed the Buddhist statutes in Afghanistan and the mausoleums and mosques in Mali so what would be different here? The hardliners are taking power as we speak. The only thing I think that will control them is when world stands up to them and the pyramids and sphinx might be enough to do it. So far no one has.

That's only in pockets. I remember those atrocities and disapprove. But there is a political movement in this country using stories like that to cry "all Muslims are beasts underneath!!" I consider that as completely unfair as the portrayals of all Christians as bombers from Idaho. My opinion. cn

I remember stories coming out of Afghanistan of courageous archaeologists, scientists, museum staff, all working together to save the artifacts and ancient treasures the Taliban were hunting down to destroy. They risked their lives to save Afghanistan's heritage and ancient culture. Some were tortured and killed. Others survived the torture. No one broke. They were all Muslim.

I'm not, let me repeat this, I am not comparing the extremes of Nazism and everyday causal Islam. They are behaving just like the Germans did when Hitler came to power.

God, I am drunk, too drunk to make sense. Went to the Moose and OMG I HAD FUN.

No one believed that Hitler would do or be able to do what he said he would do. They said that right up to the time that they started to come for people and then it was too late. The population was scared and did nothing. Which is what happened in Germany and Mali.

“Fear brought me here,” said Ely Ould Mohamed, who raises goats and fled Lerneb, a village between Goundam and the Mauritanian border. “There’s M.N.L.A. and Ansar Dine in my zone. Nothing is going right. Most people have already left. And the people are living miserably.” He was standing in the back of a pickup with his wife and five children, and had traveled six days by donkey cart to reach the border. “People are living in fear, and they are leaving,” said Abuba Ag El Mostapha, a farmer of 65 who had come with five children from Duenza, south of Timbuktu. He spoke of numerous arrests in the town carried out by the Gandakoy, an armed faction that has allied itself with the Islamists.

Then the population was so scare they just left. Just like in Germany those that could get out did when the door was still open. Those that don't know history are doomed to repeat it. CN, you and Carne know history. I'm not saying we don't have some foolish Christian extremist, we do, they are incredibly small in number. But nothing compared to the numbers that Islamic extremist are, that kill, maime, dislocate and threaten every day. I didn't hear one story today about a Christian killing anyone today because they were extremist, but I did hear about a Copt Christian being killed today by a radical Islamist.

It isn't a life or death decision in the USA to go to school but it is for little girls every day in radical controlled Islamist countries it is. You seem to forget history and the history you should be afraid of right now isn't Christian history.

Sorry, I'm 2 sheets to the wind and not sure I'm making any sense.
