A day in the life in Puna (photo essay)

I just wanted to share some pics with all you folks out there. Please feel fee to make comments, or ask questions. It is my observation that the Big Island is "no ka oi", for growing God's gift to mankind! I have grown on three different islands over 34 some odd years. My observation comes from that, and that alone. Plus let's not forget it is my view only too. But let me also state, I have never been afford the luxury to grow on Molokai, Lanai, or Kauai either.

Sure it's not easy growing here in Puna because we have very little top soil with six to 800 yr. old laval right beneath it! But I've been growing in grow bags for close to 30 years so that's not an issue for me. The Big Island offers still affordable fee simple land! It's huge, and most importantly, it's very progressive in it's thinking. It offers the perfect living environment for a ganja warrior/farmer. Enough with the talking!

I'll try to post pics daily. It's currently raining in Puna. When it stops, I will take a few pics of the next to last wave of short season plants. Some of these four footers have cola's that would make John Holmes green with envy!

Places I have grown over the years:

A. Maui
1. Honokwai Valley
2. Kaanapali cane field next to old air strip
3. Ulupalakua Ranch
4. Makawao
5. Iao Valley

B. Oahu
1. North Shore(anywhere between Pupukea Heights & Comsat Rd.)
2. Mokuleia (next to water tower)
3 .Tantalus off of Roundtop Dr.
4. Manoa Valley( my front yard)

C. Big Island
1. Puna currently living and growing here. Sorry no locations at this time!)

I will attempt to grow two possibly three monsters this long season! But it's not easy here on B.I., we are covered in lava. But I have some 15 or 20 gallon grow bags around somewhere? But normally I don't let my ego get in the way of my growing. It can turn very costly(rip offs) doing this! WE are not like California, we are not all spread out like their terrain. I think they have a perfect setup in the central coastline from Santa Barbara, all the way up thru Big Sur for growing. I'd love to spend a year, or one season growing in and around the Big Sur area. It's so beautiful, yet so spread out too. I remember going down to the beach there several years back(10 or more years), and discovering purple swirling sand down on the beach/shoreline! Good memories of the area.

okay, I best put up so more pics. In the one pic are some keikis that I have growing in an indoor environment. In all my years growing, I have never grown inside. This is my first attempt and I'm already perplexed with these babies? What is wrong with them? I'd be super happy if someone that is knowledgeable with indoor growing can address my problem. Plants are slowly coming around after flushing them for two days straight. Any ideas?

aloha, looks like a magnesium deficiency as well as a potassium deficiency. sounds like possible pH lockout, what is your soil mix? do you know what pH your water is?

please fully flush your soil to get out excess nutrients by watering 5x the volume of the soil, this should help you leach out chemical salts

please dissolve one spoon of Epsom Salt into warm water then mix that into a bottle water filled with cooler water, please use this as a foliar spray

if you have dolomite/garden lime please add some to your soil(crush it if possible) as this will help raise your soils ph

then dissolve 2 table spoons of Epsom Salt into a gallon of water, and feed alongside what other fertilizer you are using, if you have a flower fert (that has some K) use some of that, check the label.

your problem is a mobile nutrient issue(it is moving from the bottom of the plant up) which is why i think it is MG issue and K issue.

i hope this helps you.

Hey "RK",

I was thinking "lockout" too. But this is a bit confusing to me. My outdoor plants look extremely healthy. Besides a possible ph lockout, I wonder if my room temp swings are effecting growth too? My room is a basic room with no insulation for walls. So during midday heat between 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. room gets upwards close to 88 degrees, and at night it can drop down to about lower 60's. How does that effect plants? This is new to me. I've grown outside all my life(over 30 yrs), but this is first time growing inside!

RK", I truly appreciate any info you can offer me. This new adventure is very frustrating to me! Yet at the same time I'm enjoying the entire process!

aloha, yep that is an Mg and K issue, possible lockout, maybe the plants have been finicky. if your waters ph is right then flushing it should be your first step, over-feeding would be the worse thing to do in an lockout issue, as long as your pH is in line it shouldnt be a problem. whats is your relative humidity? 88F is a little too hot, but the humidity should be fine
