Hey everybody, how's it going?
I wanted to share my experiences as a first time grower. One plant went absolutely haywire, but everything is beautiful now, and I think some of what I've learned might be interesting or useful to people.
This all started when a friend from far up north, in northwest territories, came and visited me during Christmas. As a goof I put a seed in some dirt and put it away. To my surprise it sprouted, and so I vowed to take care of it. I boxed it in using records, and this was just coincidence, but used the beatles sgt. peppers...it was funny looking in to see all four beatles looking at it... they look so baked. Especially John. anyways, I went out and bought a cheap and shitty 13 Watt grow light. This plant went haywire. We had a wind storm, so my power and heat was out for two days. I didn't PH anything at all, and just used miracle grow lol... It actually created 6-fingered leaves and looked like a monster. It looked horrible.
So, I thought I'd try again. I planted 16 of the same strain (lemon haze) and thought "surely not all of these are going to sprout..". Every one of them sprouted. I then went out and bought a seedling kit that came with just one T5 light. They're super healthy, very green, and dong very well. They all created this sea of green, and all at the same height, except one of them is TOWERING over the others and just exploded.
All of these plants are given the right PH. Ive never taken care of something so intensely before... It's really getting me through winter. I had to toss out the first plant it looked so awful. But the rest are doing great. So here's an interesting thing I want to throw out there: Miracle grow is terrible, don't ever use it... BUT, believe it or not, there is a very useful product out there called shake n' feed. It has organic ingredients, earthworm castings, kelp, calcium, magnesium, zinc and really good nutrients. This stuff works amazing, and is only $14. People are going to rip on me, but this stuff is 'great' for vegetation. I'm going to flush and use bloom products for flower, but the shake n' feed works great. My plants are super green and healthy. As a precaution, the NPK ratio is very high, 10-5-15, so I added a small amount.
I can't grow all 16 plants, thatd be insane. I live in an apartment building so that's not going to fly. I've ordered a Viparspectra 300W and just going to grow the best looking plants out of 16. I've learned it really doesnt take much to get the plants going. I visited a local hydroponics store and the prices were insane... They tried to push everything they can on me and its just not worth it. A couple T5's for vegetation, typical soil, and basic nutrients, and simple PH metre is all you need. It really doesn't take much. Of course it comes down to the seed's genetics and other environmental factors, but just be mindful to not go overboard on the initial startup.
These lemon haze plants are doing incredible, but I recently visited my local bud shop and they gave me 20 seeds of Cherry Pie that I cant wait to get going. This has been really interesting and keeping me occupied this winter. Our Province decided to sell cannabis in liqour stores, which I think is silly, so I'm going to grow my own. I've been researching like mad and this site's been really useful. I've been taking pictures of the progress and will keep people posted on the flowering. I'm going to give them 3 more weeks of veg then it's going into flower. They all popped up on New Years Day, and started really veg'ing around the 11th of Dec.
I think I have two or three males, but the rest seem to be females, and one of them is the queen! It was exploding since it sprouted, towering over the rest. The fan leaves are like jungle thick and the size of my palm. It's really gone insane, and looking really great. I topped them a bit early but the growth is working out nicely. So believe it or not, miracle grow actually has a good product for cannabis in veg. Be careful, because I think it may be the only real useful product out there for cannabis.
They're all crammed in as much as they could possibly be crammed together. Today they're going in new pots and into the grow new grow space. New light, new set-up. Going to see what they can do.
ps. I forgot to mention... as an experiment I used Glacier smart water for the first 3 weeks. People were wondering if you could use it, and as far as I can tell, absolutely. Also, with the shake n' feed, watch for salt buildup. I think for my cherry pie Im going to use what other people use for veg, but was interesting to note that miracle grow does have something that can be useful
