i am very interested in these bulbs . they run in a standard hps.. now is this just a conversion bulb? what is the lumen difference in this and a standard?
i havean xtra 400 watt hps ballast and would love to throw some xtra blue into my veg tent.
is this better than a 400w mh?
Do a google search on cdm400s51, this should help you find a PDF from phipps outlining the specifications ofthe lamp.

The basics, the 250 and 400 watt units work on magnetic (coil and core) ballasts only, digital/electronic ballasts will cause a lamp failure almost 100% of the time, this is due to the frequency the ar. Tube is designed to operate at... 50/60hz vs xx,xxx hz of a digital ballast.

Do not use lumins as refrence to the lamps capability unless you are concerned with lighting for humans and not plants. Lumin output is lower than a "standard" hps, but a look at the spectrum easily explains why.

Your best bet is to research and see if the lamp meets your needs, as it is a poor choice for commercial "cash" crops. This is mainly due to lamp cost and only being available up to 400w.

Stupid iPhone not having spell check :P

hey navy, do you plan on flowering with those cmh's?

id like to see how they turn out if you do... im considering getting some, becuz id rather not buy a MH and a HPS and switch em out, i like to keep just one lamp if possible, and i dont like HPS.
i swear hps bud does not taste as good as MH..... even tho the HPS has more bag appeal and will finish faster

Stoned,

Yes, I am going to flower with the CMH. Finishing the cabnet tonight, an then I'll just be waiting for lamps to arrive. I will post a journal once I start flowering.

I have been one of the few here that is lovin on these lights :bigjoint:

I have a lot of info in my class that I'm teaching

but for those of you that want one THEY ARE NOT MORE $$$ THAN HPS

Get em here for $50, have the ballast (all in one, ballast & hood) for $149

few bucks more for the 400 and a seperate ballast for the 400 for $169 (I emailed em)

They also have a page that gives more info about CMH
http://www.growlightexpress.com/ceramic-metal-halide-bulbs-9/mastercolor-ceramic-metal-halide-250-watt-horizontal-87.html

here is a thread at another forum that started in 2007 and is still going (over 200 pages) it's a long read but a lot of experimenting and pics
the pdf mention earlier is posted as a pic on the first page

THERE IS NO OTHER BULB MADE THAT IS CLOSER TO THE SUN, PERIOD

38.49 for a 400w cmh! and they have cdm's so if you have a hps ballast, you dont have to get a new one...
You have to be careful, the link I gave you is THE bulb that does not have the UV filters in the glass some of them do

That is why I give out that link because they show the Phillips model # which is the good one! that DOES NOT have the uv filters

Don't think the outcome was light related, I have seen awesome results with that light in other grows

Navy, how long did you flower them before harvest?

I'm still in the experimental phase, and learning growing as I go. So by no means can I be used as a gauge to the effectiveness of this lamp, but I am trying to offer my observations of how much happier all of my indoor plants are under the CMH. There is no point showing my lettuce, tomatoes, peppers etc, because that isn't what this site is about.

I am by no means an experienced grower, but as I learn and experiment I have found one thing for certain... everything enjoys being under the cmh. My dogs love basking in it's light, my wife and I find the light extremely pleasant to be under. The best part, is when the sunlight is coming through the window the way my cabinet is setup I can compare the light to the sun and while it is clearly dimmer than the sun the color temp is very close with the CMH being slightly on the red side.

The point most of us CMH guys are trying to make is this: If you have a 400w HPS magnetic setup for the $60-$80 it is worth trying this lamp, because HPS doesn't give you a calm, I'm on the beach in some tropical place surrounded by wonderful plants feeling.

I have no experience with dual HPS/MH setups but I imagine their performance would be comparable to the CMH, but with the CMH you get a better spectrum plus only needing one of the most common HID ballasts available and one mogul socket.

This plant has been flowering for 51 days.

I had one plant that hermied pretty bad on me, and I chopped it down at 32 or 35 days, buds were about half the size of the ones shown here.

With this strain with about 65 days or more plus Co2 the buds were easily twice the size, but in that case they were under the HPS. Under the HPS they had no where near the sugar(don't remember how to spell the correct name... tricome or something?) production.

I've also had some UV burns come up on these plants as well as one cola was allowed to stay within 3cm of the lamp for a week or two, this would burn the hairs right back into the sac. There were no heat related burns on any of my plants, just reactions to the UV.

Average cabinet temp was 25-28 C, with the occasional spike to 32C for short durations if I forgot to take the blanket off, or to open the window, but that was the max operating temp of the cabinet with the ambient temp around 10-15 C.

Feeding was kind of all over the place, I went from my normal mix to quarter power and gradually worked it back up to full power over the 51 days.

So no Co2, only fresh air and pulled back feeding I would call this experiment a success. As I get more dialed in I will continue to post pictures, but I am impressed with the CMH to no end, and my next upgrade to the cabinet will be to take the 400w cmh from my veg area and put it in the flowering area. There will be 800watts of CMH light over 3'x2' with UB's 4 cola's, with 2week gaps between each set of plants put into the flowering area for a perpetual grow. I will also add a C02 generator and continue to research on nutrition so I can feed the plants correctly.

CMH = Lower yield/better quality... HPS = Bigger buds/less resinous. Make sense to you guys? I'm rocking the 400w CMH in my cab and I'm liking the results.. As I only grow for myself and I sure do like some stanky danky's then this is perfect for myself.

gday -im in soil wit organics i garden in a 39inch sq tent -- i burn a 250w eye hortilux _HPS and a 250w philips_CMH side by side at flower i throw in my uvb for an hour a day as far away as i can get it in my tent

i remember different readings alll added up to say that early bud mh better to reduce the stretch --hps better in mid bud process to give you rock hard buds --and mh better in final stages to take advantage of final fattening of buds

i use both lights all the time i sometimes leave in place and spin pots location under diff lights determined by stage of flower --sometimes i spin and rotate pot position throughout entire grow both lights for all stages

me and my plants love both lights eye and cmh their the best -- and the clearity of the cmh un fuckin believable for first timers --like in jewlery store under those show light s bright and clear

try them guranteed you will feel just like me and be done for a long time to come --untill lights improve forget led for about 5 to 10 years

let there be light --may grow gods smile there light upon your beans --1Luv
