a simple cloning experiment

So now you're down to the one in the cup?

A buddy of mine tried cloning last year, cut 7 dipped in rooting powder no humidity dome, he didn't even mist them. All 7 rooted within 14 days.

Im doing pretty much the same thing but I mist once every morning. Been 10 days only 2 yellow leaves on one.
i still have 3, 2 in soil 1 in water
i pulled the one out of soil just to see if there was any rooting at 1 week
and there did seem to be a bit, i have mother loaded with shoots so i decided to experiment a bit
the cutting in water has put out a tiny bit of root, just enough to say so
but that cutting is very green, with just a little loss of color
from what i've seen, a cutting seems to root faster in soil than plain water
the yellowing seems to indicate the beginning of rooting
but that's just a low experience cloner talking

How long since you first planted?

Yeah I read yellowing is the clone using the energy to make roots, makes sense. But I've also seen plenty of clones first rooting still healthy and green.

been about 10 days, i have a pretty good feel on this strain pheno, cloned it once before
takes 2 weeks to really start rooting, maybe a bit longer
the yellowing/green is still a bit of a mystery to me, maybe a strain quirk, some root quick, others don't?
of course rooting compound would make it easier, but if i don't have to pay for 1 more thing, that's fine by me
the pc cloning case i have uses a 13 watt cfl, not much cost there, just 1 less chemical to have around

Something I've discovered about choosing clone stock.

The more vigorously the mother plant is vegging, the faster cuts from her will root.

Yes, some cuts will root with very little help, but I still use rooting powder or gel as insurance.

I soak my cuts in cool water with a few drops of Superthrive for about twenty minutes before trimming and applying the rooting compound and sticking them in a soil medium. The soil is thoroughly saturated and usually in peat pots.

This method has worked on some difficult to clone strains.

Its been about 11 days since I took my clones I'll try to get a pic with my laptop cam if it doesn't look to shitty, my digital cam is at my cuz house. Im starting to see new growth on a few, im officially a cloner. :)

Here they are, like I said shitty pics but you can see the green:-P. Also the method I did was half in peat pellets and half plain soil I have a towel under them and a heating pad under that (at first I didn't but here lately its been cold). I tried just the pellets before but couldn't keep them things moist all the time they were a bitch to read... using soil with them makes it idiot proof! I read up on it a few weeks back.

You can see the one in the middle stretching for the light already, I got them more than 2 feet from 2 4' fluoros, clonings so easy! Haha

they seem to be doing pretty well, not much yellow the best i can tell
i definitely get more yellowing with my soil clones, but it's done as 'no frills' as can be

i've had baad soil cloning experiences when the plants should have been sitting in a warmer, more humid place...

+ much better success with vermiculite & a little coco coir, because it drains faster and forms small pockets of air, which the stem needs in combo with high humidity to start rooting. but you have to water and mist pretty often.
also with inmedium air exchange, you have less chance of stem rotting, vs. warm humid still air....
so the stem should not be/does not have to be wet at all times, and through the leaves does the cutting drink most readily, not from moist earth - it's got no root:S

when it's in the glass, it's really...solid.... but as already said, you need fresh water every few days...if you see stains of darker colours, you can shoot em up with some diluted bleach solution (1-2%)....and then wash the stem again..if it's bad, amputate.

i'll give it a shot, i've used a dome but not the cubes
i think the fundamental idea is pretty much the same in cloning, the right amount of moisture
i think the cubes are supposed to do just that, wet but not too wet
the obvious steps are inserting cuttings into the wet cubes, dome over the top raises the humidity

so at the 2 week mark, no rooting compound, just straight to medium
left is a cutting in soil, 2 weeks old, losing 2 lower fans
in the middle is cutting in water, 2 weeks old, beginning to yellow on lower fans
barely any root showing in the water cutting, still looks good on the whole
to the right is a newer cutting, 1 week old, so it looks better
i pulled the original at 1 week to see if there was any rooting
there was, just a bit, but it had started

so at this point, this is what seems to be happening
the soil cutting is rooting, based upon what i saw in the one i pulled
also note the dark green that is beginning to show on the left cutting
i have cloned this pheno before, this is consistent with rooting
so at this time, straight soil is better than straight water, at least in this cheap setup
i think one more update in a week should make the result clear

about 2 1/12 weeks for the 2 original cuttings, pretty interesting
on the left the cutting in the soil for 2 1/2 weeks
2 to 3 of the lower fans yellowing/dropping, this is pretty similar to prior clones in plain soil
nice dark green color going in the top, this clone is taking, not real pretty, but it worked

now the cutting that was placed in water is in the middle
it does look a bit better than the soil clone, but no dark color
no nutes other than what it's sucking from itself, so that makes sense
the water clone has just thrown a tap root, grew nearly an inch in one day

so finish out this trial, i'll toss the water rooted clone into soil tomorrow
and we'll see the final results in a week or so, i think
cutting on right is 1 1/2 weeks old, done as a backup

do i need the rooting compound so start the clone????
need? no, i've just got these 2 clones going without compound
but compound is supposed to speed up the process
also, some strains may be tougher to clone, compound could make a real difference there
i just transplanted my water clone to soil, i'm calling it a clone because the root structure has really taken off
so for this particular strain, and under these conditions(no heating mat), it took about 2 1/2 weeks to get some roots going

i am new also but have done 3 batches of 18 lemon haze clones, and have a prety good success rate with a humidome, rapid rooter plugs, clonex, and just keep em miost. roots as early as 9 days and no later than 18 days. just thought ide share. great post.

thanks for posting results, i like numbers, especially with someone who sounds like has a similar level of experience
9 days sounds good, not sure how hard the sativa/haze family is to clone, sounds like you had good luck

I've been running my ez cloner for all my runs. but this time i decided to try one in just soil also. after the initial loss in static pressure (wilt) they r looking good for 3 days.

It will be interesting to see the difference to the cloner though
