My thoughts are to top a plant once it’s large enough to have enough vegetation left to recover its self.
usually wait im until 6-7 nodes then top just above the 5th node.
usialy 3-4week from seed.
i use to too early. Like as soon as I could. Because I was impatient. But doing so slowed the plant down. My plants are about double the size in the same veg time by waiting until the plants bigger to top

That’s when I too too as I find the same results in stunted plants if done too early
