Advice on upgrading 400w to 600w

I am currently using a 400w hps in a 2dx4wx5h tent. I just got a 4wx4dx6.5h tent and I was wondering if a 600w would be overkill for this height and area. How much head space will I need so I can keep my plant tops from getting too hot? I have an air cooled hood with a glass lens. So as a general rule how far away should a 600 be from the tops of the plants? Thanks in advance.

same set up az mine except my tent is taller i use 6inch fan with filter on hood and air is sucked through it and out my light is 6 to 8 inches from tops temps around 72 to 78f

Thanks for the reply. I am also wondering how much of a temperature rise I could expect going from a 400 to a 600. I am far down south and it gets pretty hot. Right now with my cooled hood the light raises my tent about 8 degrees from the outside room so I keep my ac set at 74 and it never gets over 82ish in the tent so I am wondering how low I will have to set my ac for a 600 all though it will be in a bigger tent. heh

hempstead, it could be dependent upon the size/cfm rating on your fan. What size fan are you running to cool your light,
and is also venting the tent? just a few questions to try and help.....
All the Best!

I guess the best way to find out is to try it. heh I have a 4inch value line fan which moves 171 cfm but it sucks through my carbon filter. I am just gonna get it and try it out. I will figure something out. Thanks for the replies.

I started with about the same size fan and had to upgrade later. The temps stayed around 82, just using a 400w hps,
so if you're looking at a 600w, you may need to upgrade your fan as well... I went with an 8" active air, and I'm runnin'
about 74 degrees with 525 watts now. Hope this helps.....
ATB!

As for overkill, the 600 will be good, but not nearly overkill. Figure the 600 puts down 100k lumens (tad under) divide that by 16 (4x4) and you get around 6000 lumens a sq ft. Actual light will be less, but it is a good optimal conditions estimate.

Have fun!

Yes you are correct if anyting its underkill not overkill....... He said himself hes lives where its hot and he has to run an a/c to cool his 400w already ...a 4" fan is just barely getting the job done you should get a bigger fan NOT run your a/c higher....... A bigger fan will be alot cheaper in the long run over just running your a/c cooler.....I Run an 8" 500+ cfm fan on a 1000w lamb and my temps are only about 5 degress higher than ambient temps....

Yeah I didn't address temps as it seemed to have been covered a few times already.
