air cooled hoods difference

maby its nothing maby its something? that's why i am asking everybody out there! i am defiantly buying a new air cooled hood but my question is, besides the obvious difference in size is there any difference between say 2 identical hoods one being a 6inch and one 8inch. I tried looking around for an answer, some people claim to say the 8 inch dosent put out as much light because of the larger opening for air. is this valid or am i just over thinking it?:sad: thanks guys

8" hoods are just designed to allow more airflow. people stringing several lights together on a single inline fan or those with carbon filter on one side of their hoods are the ones that benefit from having 8" vents so that they can use larger fans with higher CFM's.

All things staying equal, that's true.

It is true. The larger opening will be a larger non-reflective area. This will reduce the illumination provided by the reflector.
IMO the minor reduction in illumination is non-consequental. Better to focus on adequate cooling.

exactly. a 6" hood is fine for 1-2 light strings or smaller wattage bulbs. if you need an 8" hood you shouldn't be worried about the minor difference in reflective surface as much as you should be worried about cooling.

awesome thanks, just looking to get everything in line to go indoor as i have had too sketchy of a time guerrilla growing! a 4x8 tent with 2 600 watters for lighting and trying to get my ventilation and odor control figured out :bigjoint:

great minds think alike! :-P what size carbon filter you running on your set-up? i am bidding on 2 hydrofarm 6inch inline fans 400 cfm each. one to cool the lights and one for a 550 cfm carbon filter hows that sound?

i use little CAN33 filters just cause that is the smallest one they make. i think they are rated for 400cfm. would be more than enough for that space. if you can find a smaller one then go for it if it's cheaper.

fair enough im goin to be venting thru the roof and live in the great north out in the county so smell is not too much of a problem but i don't want the dank smellin up the house when famliy ect is over! thanks for the info defiantly has helped me out :peace:

I loved my can 33 I used a 240 CFM Can fan for it because I was just scrubbing the air the thing lasted me like 3 years and in my opinion is better than the hydrofarm carbon scrubber, with my can33 I could actually smell that carbon scent throughout the room, my Active Air by Hydrofarm not so much.

You can vent and clean the air at the same time if u make a baffle box or run you exhaust through a trashcan with the lights running through it. Way less ducting that way. Never scrimp on fans thats the one thing people fuck up on most airflows a huge factor you want a large number of air exchanges in a room to get the best yield. Just a few tips. :)

yeah doin some lookin around and cant decide on a carbon filter. preferably between a can or a phresh? is it goin to be too much weight to have 2 silverstar air-cooled hoods plus the carbon filter hanging in my secret jardin DR240W?

i think you'll be fine. you'll actually probably have 2 fans hanging as well. i've seen 2 xxxl hoods hung from a 4x8 tent frame. you should be good to go. those poles are designed to flex anyway.

Check the weight limits from SJ. They barley support 2 blockbusters and a 8 inch S&P inline fan and that fan ain't heavy as far as fans go. I had to put my carbon filter and other 8 inch S&P fan on a tall stand in the corner to stay in weight limits. I use two 1000 watt Quantum's and they work great. I got 88 watts of light per sq ft with added co2 and the buds love it.
