Aluminum/Mirrors @ Base -vs- LST

I was thinking...

The LST technique works by adding light to the stalk, vs. at the tops of the leaves.

It makes the stalk/stem want to generate more leaves aimed at that light -- while existing leaves curl to aim at that newly positioned light as well.

So I was thinking - why not use mirrors or aluminum foil pieces at the bottom of the plant? Basically at the base of the plant to create new light "sources" under the leaves aimed at the stalk/stem of the plant.

Wouldn't this work and get more leaves/stems/budsites to form???

mirrors and foil cause excessive heat spots.

What if they are a ways away from the plant, like at the edge of the pot, ~5" from the stalk??

I'm using CFL so I doubt heat would be an issue...... The bulbs themselves are barely hot to the touch.

lst works because the highest part of the plant creates 'new' growth. You tie down the highest shoots below there natural height and new growth will come from the nodes closest to the top of the plant. Light hitting stalks has nothing to do with it so dont worry about reflective material.

Bright white is a better reflective than aluminum foil or mirrors. Use a bright white vinyl or something similar to cut out circles to fit the tops of your pots. Use scissors to cut half way into the circle and cut a hole in the center large enough for your stalk. Slide the disc/circle vinyl piece on your stalk.

It will stop any light that might penetrate your medium and hit roots. It will also reflect any light reaching the bottom of the canopy upwards.

I think the bright white vinyl I used was called visqueen but I'm not 100% positive

most peoples base or floor to there grow room is reflective anyway , and no it wont have the same effect as lst , the plant will grow towards the main light ,any light that reflects back onto the plant is a bonus but hardley noticable imho.
